I just received my BAS by Bura that Uncle Bill put up on the "steals for 8/21 thread". Here are the specs:
Overall length: 15 inches
Blade length: 10 inches
Widest part of blade: 1 3/4 inch
Blade width at bolster: 1 1/4 inch
Blade thickness at bolster: 3/8 inch
My first impressions are *very* favourable. Balance and weight appears to be suberb - this khukuri fits me like a glove (unlike the monster 20" AK I already have - imposing, but a bit OTT for my needs). Fit between blade and sheath is very good, and the overall lines are well-defined and pleasing to behold.
The horn handle has some grainlines (it was a "steal", remember?), but the blade itself is virtually flawless. It's so nice, in fact, that I'm not sure I'll dare to use it. From a few test swings, my only gripe is the swelling end of the handle which digs into my palm. I'm considering to file it a little more round on the side opposite to the edge, but again I'm afraid I'll turn a sweet khukuri into one that is merely good...
I'm not very keen on blade engravings in general, but I was very charmed by the inlaying work done by Bura (red and gold colours, even the cho is coloured!). By the time the colours have worn off, I'm sure I've bonded quite strongly with it!
Thanks to Uncle Bill for the remarkable deal -- I'm quickly becoming an addict!
In closing, here's a pic. Note that half of the handle didn't make it into my scanner.
