I'm trying to decide which of these knives I should purchase. The knife will be used for camping and bushcraft chores. I would like to hear your opinions on either of these knives. The only thing that concerns me with the barky is the fact that the tang has been skeletonized, and I'm affraid this will compromise the durability of the knife. As far as the dumpster mutt goes, I fear that the thickness .280 will be far too much for any sort of cooking duties in camp like slicing meat, onions, and potatos. But as always I want the knife to be more than strong enough to excell at any given wilderness survival situation.

What are your thoughts? Any input is appreciated!

The bark river will be way more than tough enough for anything you need to do (it has mike's special warranty). The DM is too thick for bushcraft IMO. It is also said to come with a crappy edge as well so that may be a problem for you if you aren't good at sharpening.

Forgive my naivety, but what are the specifics of Mike's special warranty? I thought it was just a normal lifetime warranty?

Does the skeletonized tang weaken the overall endurance at all?

Not only is the DMCG extra thick, it is also saber ground, producing an even more obtuse edge. There are other versions of the Mutt, such as the Dumpster Mutt Double Cut, that are ¼” thick at the spine and a straight grind to the edge that will work better for bushcraft. But if I wanted a Scrap Yard bushcraft knife I’d look for a Yard Keeper Combat Grade. It’s a 4 ½” blade, 3/8” thick at the spine, and full ground. There was a recent release, so some may be available on the secondary market. Another release is due sometime soon, so you have a chance to get one new.

Scrap Yard makes a run of a particular knife, then announces it on its forum. Comes the time, Dan Busse gives the “Go” and you email your order as quickly as possible. Some models sell out in less than an hour. Some models sell out in five minutes.

According to Mike at Bark River, they pay more money to have the skeletonized tangs cut, Mike said why would we pay extra for weaker tang design? I don't think you have to worry about it, it's not going to be a problem at all.

If your "camping and bushcraft chores" include chopping through concrete or embedding the blade in a tree and then stomping on it sideways, get the DMCG.

Otherwise, get the Bravo.

Mike's warrantee is basically, unless the knife was damaged by a badger, he'll fix it free.

I have both and if I could only have one for general camp duties, it would be the Bravo-1with a micarta handle, but we all have opinions.

I'm definitely leaning towards the bravo. No I don't plan on doing anything that Noss would do to a knife for sure. That's all fine and dandy if he likes to abuse knives like that on his site, but it really doesn't prove much to me. The worst the bravo would ever see would be some light batoning for amusement, since I have an axe, maybe some use around water, and scraping the occasional bone as I skin should I be lucky enough to get a deer in august.

Thanks for that piece of input IUKE, it wouldn't make sense to pay more to have something like that done. I was reading the BRKT forums lastnight and it doesn't seem like Mr. Stewart is a dumb man either. I think I have my choice!

What about some custom kydex for the bravo, does anyone have any pictures of theirs in kydex?

I own both knives, and in my mind their is no comparrison. The Bravo is built like a tank and handles like a Porsche. the Dumpster mutt is built like a tank and handles like... a tank.

The Dumpster Mutt feels like a sharpened prybar in your hand and is very blade heavy. The Bravo sits right on the first finger and just feels very nimble by comparrison. I'd choose the Bravo for anything involving wood. As stated earlier, if I wanted to chop concrete or hack the doors off of a jeep, I'd pick the Dumpster Mutt (which could do it!)

Ever see the movie Rob Roy?

In it the bad guy, quite the swordsman, is asked why he does not like the traditional Scottish Claymore opposed to the lighter rapier he was using.

His response; "If I was going to kill an ox it would be my first choice my lord."

Proper tool for the job.

Camping and bushcraft chores for a knife are basically cutting stuff. For that you need a knife that cuts.

If you get the Dumpster Mutt you will have to modify it to perform normal cutting chores if you hope to keep up with a Bravo 1.

JMHO

YMMV

I don't have a dumpster but my Bravo caused me to sell off some of my other knives. I didn't know a knife so tough cut cut so well. I believe the Bravo 1 is going to be a future classic!

For a Bushcraft style of knive, even the Bravo-1 is very heavy duty.
You won't be dissapointed. It's a wolf in sheepsclothes.

It will be interesting to see the specs on the new BRKT Gunny. I am not sure when it is due out, but it sounds like a nice one, Baby brother to the Bravo-1 at 2/3 the size, also A2 steel:cool:

The Bravo-1 would be my choice. I love mine and can't imagine how I could damage it. Here is a shot of it with the stock kydex sheath. I bought the leather sheath for mine as it just feels so good in leather.;)

Got the same knife. Love the way it looks with that white micarta. Another vote for the Bravo-1. Fantastic knife.

I have both blades and you can not go wrong with either blade in my opinion.....I believe the DM is a stronger knife and will hold a razors edge, granted you may need to have it put on,but the bravo 1 is a excellent knife as well,I have a DMle is without coating is a better comparison to the Bravo 1.... but for what you describe the Bravo 1 will fit the bill

Thanks for all your input guys. I'll be ordering a Bravo-1 with black micarta next thursday. I can't wait to get it in my hands!
