BRKT Fox River or Bravo 1?

Which one would you rather have as a hunting knife if you were a deer hunter? It would be used for field dressing, skinning, and probably some de-boning and processing. I'm looking at both in a2 steel and the Bravo 1 would be without the ramp. The cost difference between the two doesn't really matter either.

The Fox River measures .170" thick. The Bravo-1 comes in at a hefty .215".

I have a Woodland Special and it is plenty thick for your intended uses at .145". I also find the handle of the Woodland/Highland/Fox River very comfortable without the palm swell.

I have a Bravo-1 and it is an outstanding woods knife but I'd opt for the Fox River for a deer knife if I were only going to have one.

Of course, if you wanted to carry two, I'd have to suggest that you get the Bravo-1 for the heavy work and the smaller Woodland Special for use as a caper/skinner and smaller critters.

That wasn't much help at all, was it? :o

brkt has so many that would be great at the tasks you describe. I personally settled on a Gunny and a Canadian special for similar tasks and lite wood craft chores. I think the Fox river falls into a similar class with the gunny and canadian special imo. size and weight and blade length. The Bravo 1 would be a bit heavier but certainly capable as well. Id go with the B1 if i thought i might need it for heavier tasks than skinning from time to time. In any case i dont think you can go to far wrong with any of them.

The Fox River is a game processing knife. The blade has a downward angle and the spine is also sloped for holding while skinning. The Bravo-1 is more a "survival" knife and is quite stout. The Foxy is in my opinion a more versatile tool because it is excellent for skinning and can handle just about any other camp chore.

Either one will get the job, done....but I prefer the Fox River for the task. Either in Recurve or Regular Version.

I have both, the Fox River is hands down the better knife for processing game.

Another vote for Fox River. Check out Virtuovice's hunting videos on youtube. Fox River comes out on top after trying out a dozen or more knives, Bravo1 included.

Thanks guys, I was kinda leaning towards the Fox River, but just wanted some opinions. The knife is actually for my brother and I know he prefers something with a 5ish inch blade, but I haven't really been able to find much around that size. The knife is for his 40th birthday which was actually in July. I had ordered him a custom before his birthday that was supposed to be ready just after his birthday, but after being told three times that the knife was on its way, I finally gave up on it at the end of September and bought something else off of the knife makers exchange. A few days after I paid for the second knife the first one showed up, and although it was a pretty nice knife, it wasn't quite what I thought it was going to be. The second knife just showed up the other day after the maker was supposed to have touched it up a bit and made a sheath for it. Well, the second knife pretty much looks like crap. My plan was to hand both knives to him and let him pick which one he wanted, but I just wouldn't feel right having him choose between the two beings the first one isn't what I thought and the second one looks pretty bad.

Anyways I decided to get something else that I knew would show up quick and be a decent hunting knife and then give him the option of choosing between the three. I'm going to attempt to clean up the crappy looking one before I let him choose. He can have whatever one he chooses and I believe I'll keep one and sell/trade the other. The path I've been on to get him a darn knife is getting pretty darn spendy. If I get a Fox River I think I'll have over $450 invested into the whole ordeal.

If anyone has any other suggestions for something with around a 5" blade in one of the better steels, please feel free to post them up.

I hunt and clean a lot of big game, the Fox River is my favorite, quick and simple, there is a BJ 125 that is a excellent game processor, that gives you a 5" reach.

OP you have a very lucky brother. If really limited to game processing then it's the FR. If you want a camp knife that can process game if required it's the B1.
I don't have either (Aurora owner) so my opinion is useless.

Wow, that is some investment.

Well, I can understand you having trouble finding 5" hunting blades as the ideal size for most users is closer to 4"...

However, both Bob Dozier and Bill Davis offer phenomenal hunting knives in 5" blades - beautiful and superbly functional (esp. Bill's loveless-style drop-point hunters). I'm sure that there are other makers with such offerings, and you can find knives from the two I mentioned 2nd-hand or from distributors for immediate delivery. If you fall in love with the Loveless-style, Lone Wolf Knives sells a 5" (I think one is available on the 'bay').

I don't know your bro, but speaking as a hunter (white-tail and smaller game), I prefer stainless(ish), hollow or full-flat grind, drop-point, blade width ~1" and spine 3/16" or less - trying to minimize thickness behind the edge so it cuts like a fillet-knife but still has a sturdy spine. With a good HT (the main trait of a high quality knife, imho), these traits will produce the most efficient tool you can put to the task...

Sorry, i got nothing for you on either knife in your OP, consider both to be sub-optimal.

I like a blade around 4" for my hunting purposes as well, but wanted to get him something around the size that he prefers. The Fox River is .75" short of 5", but I think he'll be happy with it. I'm still looking around a bit and will probably order something tonight. Thanks for the links, I'm browsing through them a bit. I really like the loveless style knives and I kinda wish I had went to a custom maker to get one made with a 5" blade in the first place. The two knives that I've already bought were both right at 5" and would have been great if I hadn't been dissapointed in them.
