I was hoping to get some information on this broad ax. I found it while metal detecting at an old homestead. It has a 9-1/2" blade. I can not find any makers marks on it as it is in rough shape. Does anyone have any ideas as to how old it might be? Would it be worth trying to clean it up or leave as is?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Thanks for all the info. Your ax turned out great! Any idea what style or timeframe mine might be from? Thanks!

I'd guess late 1800's or more likely early 1900's. It's so well shaped that it's likely from a high production factory. But broad axes were getting less common (replaced by mills) by the 1930's. 1880-1930 would be my guess.

Pretty cool thing to happen across while metal detecting Mason1. Any way to weigh it there? I'm just curious.

Seeing the horseshoe for scale I'm guessing that's about a 7" or 8" bit, so a little small as broad axes go. I'd suspect about 4 pounds.

My home scale is telling me about 6.5 pounds. 9.5 inch blade. The other objects along with the files I found at an abandoned logging town.

Bigger than I thought. That's quite a substantial axe, then. I do hope you bring it back to life.
