Hi everyone,
I've always wanted to dabble with hewing my own timbers, so I bought a broad axe on Ebay. When I got the axe, I soaked it in Evaporust overnight, and scrubbed it heavily with a brass brush, dried it at 250F in the oven, and wiped it down with ballistol. The first pic is before I cleaned it up, and the rest are after. From my limited understanding of these things, it looks like it is mostly Iron, with a laminated steel edge. Is this accurate? I also see a stamp that says 1911, which I assume is the year it was forged. I included a picture of the makers mark, which I can't make out. Does it look familiar to anyone? Also, there is a crack in the eye, which I have included a picture of. Is this of concern? Appreciate any info about the axe anybody can provide!
