So recently I ran into a broad axe, but unlike most this one is kind of unique, despite having no markings. Its unique in that its actually in decent shape albeit some pitting under the paint, with a good (if short) handle, and a sharp blade. How do I tell if this axe is any good though? At the price I don't want to wind up with a useless piece. Thanks.

Pictures would help us on our end, but I am afraid on your end, you would have to trust your instincts and buy it and use it. If it looks good, and feels good, you have a 50/50 chance its a good axe....

The handles are supposed to be awful short. I would try to sneak a file in and give it a few licks with that. if its hard its probably good.
