My dad had a pretty nice broad hatchet when I was a kid, I'm looking for one, not expensive and not for immediate purchase, just a good brand, more along the lines of Mora quality to price ratio.

Thanks for any input.

What do you mean by "broad"? Something with a long cutting edge?

Something like this?

The Plumb 11-554 is a decent broad hatchet with a coated 20+ oz head with a proper chisel grind. The ~12" red Plumb (hickory) handle on mine wasn't as offset as I liked - I steamed it a few more degrees (The have to be slightly canted so you don't rap your knuckles when debarking.). I got my local Ace to order mine 25+ yr ago for a fraction of what a mail order yuppee woodworking supply emporium in Hotlanta wanted for it. Plumb is part of the Cooper Tool Group, so they should be widely available. Mine was made in the USA. They also made a smaller headed wooden roofing shingle style broad hatchet, but I believe it is no longer in production. Google 'plumb broad hatchets', you'll find it running $20-$40 now.

Remember, a broad axe/hatchet is chisel ground - single bevel - and should be slightly offset to clear logs when roughing.

Yeah, I know what they're used for. :D Just couldn't find one.

I'll look up plumb broad hatchets.

Thanks Stainz!

Oh yeah, just to be clear, broad hatchets are big chisels, shaped like a hatchet, an old carpentry tool.

I've seen a couple of different brands (in addition to Gransfors) from a company called Traditional Woodworker.

The thin blade profile is such that a full 3" back from the edge the blade is still only 1/4" thick. The blade is hand forged from the finest quality steel and has been hardened to 56-58 Rockwell C for the best combination of toughness and hardness. Cut ready for use the blade face has a width of a full 5-1/4". The head is 6-1/2" deep, weighs 2 1/2 lbs and has a forged nail-claw on the back.

Overall weight is 3 1/4 lbs . Overall length 15 3/4".
