I have been cleaning up a western pattern broadaxe and I discovered some lettering on it.
It looks like it's in three lines
The first line I cannot make out.
The second line reads: Goffe & Co. Warranted. I can see no first initial but I'm confident of the rest of it.
The third line reads: Ballston, (N Y?) I can see Ballston, but all I can see is the top half of the Y and it's in the right place so I'm guessing it's N Y.
I haven't found any information elsewhere, so I'm wondering if anyone here has any knowledge of this.
Thank You
Jim
P.S. I think I have solved my mystery. With some more cleaning I managed to put together a few more letters and with the help of yesteryearstools site I think my axe is a Blood-Goffe & Co.
The lettering goes:
Blood- cast steel
Goffe & Co. Warranted
Ballston, N.Y.
This matches an example shown on the site as being from around 1854.
Thank you
Jim
