A few days ago I was out doing my bushcrafty business, and had my trusty Mora Viking with me. Got bored, decided id throw it at a fallen tree. Didn't work, as expected, and the handle cracked. Now I knew that might happen but wasn't too worried since it is a cheap knife, so comments about it being stupid to throw that knife are unwelcome, I was just messing around and the knives are cheappp.I actually got the knife FREE at a bushcraft course. Now in saying all that I did love the knife and would recommend it to ANYONE. Such a great knife. I will buy more of them. Anywhooooo, handle cracked, I wrapped some duct tape around it. Went out the next day again, and was batoning a piece of wood when:

Anyway I finished my fire:

In the process burned some of these, the name of which Im not sure, but they are evergreens which were cut and in a pile so they had dried but I could smell resin in them. They burned VERYY hot and well:

Regarding the Izula, looks wise I LOVE it. I don't however, like the jimping. It's more harm than good and just makes my thumb sore quicker. The knife is very sharp though, great with the handles on, nice size. Might try parachord wrapping it. Fits nicely in my pocket. What else... sheath is decent if a little too tight, the knife takes a good tug to remove, but Im sure that will loosen a little with time. Need to give it more testing in different tasks to decide how much I like it. Had to drive around town for ages trying to find an allen key to fit the handle screws, your darn American screws are different to ours! Found one eventually anyway.

The end :P

What do you intend to do with the old Mora blade? Please do not throw it away. If you do intend to throw it away please put it in an envelope and mail it to me and I will rehandle it and use it for another 30 years or so. I hate seeing a good blade go to waste if it can be recycled.

I have seen Moras break like that sometimes but it may have been technique or possibly a bad hit. It doesn't take too much to break the plastic handles so I would only baton very small pieces of wood and even then being very careful.

As to the Izula I don't think you will be able to break it. I will trade for one someday but they seem to go very fast on the exchange. Have fun with that Izula.

I say send that blade to Alex. (or me ;) ) and let it be reused.

That izula wont likely ever fail you. At least you got to finish the fire!!

I should have said but I definitely plan to rehandle the Mora. I can't believe how good those knives are for the price! Never rehandled a knife before but I'll give it a shot. One question if you guys could answer it: Looking at the tang, it isnt straight. How would I fit pieces of wood over the top of such a wonky tang? Or would it be a better idea to "sandwich" 2 pieces on either side of the tang? I'm thinking the latter. Anyway regardless I'll try.

Darn it! I was hoping to swoop in and get the blade! Oh well.

As for a new handle for it, I would recommend talking to TommyTheWho, he makes some great wood scales for Beckers, and one of the latest things I've seen from him is a set of scales that extended the handle another inch or 2. If I had to guess, I would think you need to put at least one hole in the tang for a screw.

I think a channel cut into a solid piece of whatever for the handle with a couple 1/8 pins and 2ton epoxy will make for a nice handle, then shape to comfort. that's what i did with my svord peasant, its tang doesn't extend all the way either

Since its your first try I recommend the "sandwich" idea. You have a steel bit you can make a hole or two with?

If the tangs that tiny id like to pin it to keep it solid. but either will do ya!
