Broke my Canon EOS Rebel..... need help

Alllllllrighty then, on with the story....

There I was (all REAL good stories begin like that), furiously kicking one year old on one arm, and squiggly four year old hanging from the other, trying feverishly to make it to the truck to go home.

I had momentarily forgotten that I was armed with a Canon, which was slung over my shoulder. The arm that was supporting the 4YO was getting mighty tired, that kind of tired that comes with extreme exhaustion. So I gave him quick instructions and foisted him onto my shoulders to get some relief to the arm. He made it to his new perch, and I shook my arm feverishly to facilitate the bloodflow to the region.

Yep, the Rebel slung off there and smashed into the sidewalk. It is a hardy unit, with the only real damage being the battery compartment cover, which parted company with the rest of the body, hinge and all.

Well, I take it to the camera store. No prollem, the guy tells me. It'll cost $200. Canon does this all the time, he sez. Prolly have to replace the entire body, because the hinge and all have snapped from the camera. Don't mention the fact that right behind him is a brand new Rebel for not much more than that.

Anybody have any idea where to get this thing fixed? Does Canon really charge that, or is the camera store guy hucksterin' me?
And if I do have to buy a new camera, can you give me the name of a good digital that is on par with the Canon EOS? Thanx in advance.

Well if you want to go digital and have some money to spend, Canon does make a digital camera that uses the EOS lenses. I don't know how many or what type of lenses you might have for that camera, but if it's a fair amount it might be worth looking into.

I don't have any personal experience with that camera, but I was interested in getting one when I thought about going digital. Decided against going digital for various reasons though, but if I ever do that is what I would do.

Never mind that suggestion, just did a quick look at prices and saw they start at like $1,000. Thought they might have come down in the past couple of years.

I have an battery adapter (takes 4AA cells instead of 2 123's) for my Canon. It screws onto the bottom of the camera and doesn't need the battery cover or hinge. I bought mine overseas for about $35 but there might be something similiar on the net.

I feel for you man, as an avid photographer ( going to RIT for new media and photography ), I have had my run in with a few cameras. I had to get some parts on a canon ae-1. that was like 100 bucks. I had to get a few others fixed.

They purposely make it so they are extremly easy to break, so you have to pay them more.

Seriously, go to a few camera shops and ask for estimates to get repairs.

I like shooting standard film, but sometimes i need digital, If you have the cash get a digital, if not try to get it fixed.

btw i shoot a canon elan 7 and I currently have 3 lenses for it :)

I have seen individual camera body parts on ebay. It may be a long shot, but it's worth a look if you think you can just replace the battery cover itself with another.

The BEST (and cheapest) way of fixing a busted battery compartment cover for your Rebel is to buy yourself a Canon BP-8 Battery Pack (or a model BP-200, depending on the model of your Rebel).:

And here is the BP-200 in-case you have a Rebel 2000:

I have a BP-50 on both of my Canon EOS Elan IIe cameras, and it improves the handling quality by 100%.

I come here for many reasons. You fellas are some of those many. :)

ErikD, I just got the ol' standard lens it came with. I did however see one of those cameras you are talking about. Believe me my friend, if I had the cash I'd own it. It is a sweet unit.

KamKazmoto and Glockmann, I dig that option. It sez you can burn 100 rolls of film with alkalines. Is that so? Jeez, why didn't I know this thing existed? Better yet, why didn't the camera store guy tell me it did? Glockman, it was down at Tim's in the South Shore mall for gawd's sake.

Nawrocki, I came this close to buying that Elan. But they had such a good deal on the Rebel G I couldn't pass it up. It was a closeout back when they were bringing in the Rebel 2000.

Midget, I hear ya. I headed dead nuts for eBay right away looking for a body, some parts, anything. But came up empty.

Thanx a bunch fellas. I'll fly over there on Tuesday and see if I can't pick one of these bad boys up. Glockmann, you free for lunch on Tuesday?

Yes, I am...As long as you are buying (this time)...But somewhere cheap like "Micky-Dee's" or Burger King is ok with me...:D.

...And actually, I can bring one of my Canon EOS Elan IIe cameras so you can have a look-see at the BP-50, (although it is somewhat different from the BP for the Rebel, in that the BP-50 adds a full-length handle and a 2nd [verticle] switch).

I have found that "Tim's Camera" (that is not the owner's name anymore) prices are a little too high, and his service sometimes isn't all that good. I used to do ALOT of business with the real "Tim" before he sold the business to the new guy 3-4 years ago...I even worked there for awhile, a few years ago.

If you do a search at eBay for "Canon BP-8" you will find one there...(Sorry, I'd hot-link it for you, but that is not allowed here at BladeForums, and as a moderator, I DO have to abide by the rules in-order to set a good example.:D.).

And, if you want to go digital look at the Canon G-2 or G-3. I have the Elan 7 SLR and the G-2 digital. Digital is WONDERFUL! If you happen to have the 220EX or 420EX flash units for your Rebel you can use those same flash untits on your G-2/G-3. Check out bhphotovideo.com Highly recommended.

So, what Tuesday are you talking about?...I guess it wasn't this last Tuesday, huh?.:D.

:o

Dang it, Glockman, I was supposed to remember to fire you off an e-mail. Got stuck here and didn't get to make my trip. I'll make it up to ya, buddy.... gotta make it over there before long.

I did end up buying the BP-8 on that link you posted above. I didn't check the price over at Tim's, just going on your advice that their pricing sux. And seein' as I couldn't get out of town, I figgered UPS could get it here quicker that way.

I do want to hook up with ya and look at your Elan though. I still got yer number, and I'll give ya a shout before I come over.

I'm glad to read that you bought a BP-8. I think that you'll be pleased with it, as aside from "fixing" your broken battery door problem, it'll also give you a couple more power options, as well as a hand-strap, and make your Rebel look even more "cool"..

Anyhow, when you make a trip to Aberdeen, give me a shout...I'll be pretty easy to recognize, as I'll be the big guy with a SS Spydie in each front pocket, a SOG multi-tool on my belt (left-side), and I'll even be wearing my BladeForums "SECURITY" (moderator's) T-Shirt...LOL...:).

...And I'll bring-along my Canon Elan IIe.

id just get a new camera. my dad has an older eos that he dropped and he paid almost the price of a new one to get it fixed. the only reason he didnt just get a new one was because the model he has isnt made anymore and didnt want a new one.

Went with the suggestion and got the BP-8. Why doesn't this thing come stock? Sure handles better, and the battery life is longer using cheaper batteries. Only way to go, if'n ya ask me. Thanx for the suggestions all.

Well, if we ever meet-up for lunch, coffee, a beer, etc., bring your Rebel with your new BP-8 attached, and we can compare cameras.:).
