I managed to snap about 1-2mm of blade tip off the main clip blade on my chestnut bone CV peanut. Now, I am not one to misuse knives, and I have experience using knives with very thin blade stock and thin pointy tips. My favorite edc folders for me are my Opinels and SAK's, I also have a Case pen knife that is pretty thin and unbroken, and I had been using this peanut off and on for quite some time.
I was using the clip blade of my peanut to bore a small hole in the top of a plastic water bottle to make an impromptu squirt bottle, I must have put too much twist in the blade or it bound up in the plastic, not quite sure because it just snapped without warning.
It kind of bummed me out because I really liked my peanut, it was a very good example with flush springs, nice bone, good looking patina, and it was like my worry stone, it was so smooth and curvy that I found myself just fondling it.
Well, I carried it for a week or so after I snapped the tip off, it was still perfectly functional, but it just wasn't the same. So I tossed it in my dresser drawer and tried to forget about it and carry something else, which worked after a little while, but I began missing my 'nut, so I bought a yeller replacement in CV via the internet, it arrived and I didn't like it, one of side the knife was pretty sharp around the bolsters, like they never buffed and polished the pile side, I should have returned it or sent it in to case, but it instead went into the dresser uncarried.
I started missing my 'nut again and planned to send the yeller one to case for repair, went looking for it but it isn't where I think I left it, so maybe I will find it someday but kinda think it may be gone for good by now.
I decided to just send my old chestnut bone 'nut in to case and pay to have the blade replaced. So, my other half agrees to mail it for me since I had to go to work, well she does for $15
, she sent it via UPS and even paid them to package it for her and got overnight shipping, no doubt due to them pushing for it, well I could have shipped it for under $5 via USPS but I won't go there, at least she went through the trouble of shipping it for me.
This was my first time using Case's warranty service, I have read somewhere before that they send you a post card when they receive your knife so you know its in their hands, I waited about and week and hadn't received anything and tracked my package through UPS, it was delivered the day after it was shipped.
Well, I waited a few days longer for my post card or an invoice letting me know how much to send them for blade replacement, but instead found a package from case with a brand new peanut in it, surprised me. They replaced it at no cost, terrific, however, I wished they had just fixed my old one like I requested in the paperwork.
The new 'nut has a lighter color bone and shiny new blades, no big deal, however the extremely proud backspring on the main clip blade is a problem for me. I was just about ready to send it back, but I figured I didn't have too much room to complain since I broke the original and they didn't have to send me a new one free of charge.
I figured if I just put it in my pocket for a while it would grow on me, and it has, I barely even notice the proud spring anymore. It is a fine specimen otherwise, perfectly centered blades, no wobble, good snap, matched bone.
I am pretty happy with how it turned out, just wanted to share my long winded story about my experience with Case's customer service. The turn around time was about ten days from the time it was shipped to the time the new one was in my hand, pretty quick if you ask me.
Still not sure why they didn't just put a new blade in the old one, maybe the labor time would have cost them more than just replacing it like they did.
