I was splitting logs with it. The blade got hung up and I gave it a good shot on the back of the blade by the false edge with another log. I was holding the handle and it just snapped right at the guard. This was one of my favorite blades and I'll sure miss it. It was a good companion in the woods. What should I replace it with?

Something from Swamp Rat Knives may suit you and they have a lifetime unconditional, no questions asked guarantee.

The transition between the tang and ricasso on Cold Steel blades is quite square. Busse blades have radiused transitions, which are better. I assume that the Swamp Rat stuff us radiused as well. Check with Swamp Rat for sure, and give the Becker 7 and Becher 9 knives a loot at too. Though not as thick as the Recon Scout, they make for great bush blades.

I've been using a Becker 5 Camper as my main camp knife for a couple of years now and I love it. Testosterone got the best of me and instead of using a hachet I broke my favorite knife. It does look kinda cool in pieces on my work bench though.

How about a good ax or splitting maul?

I forgot my maul and the wood from the camp store was still a little wet so I was trying to improvise. Live and learn.

I was splitting wood with my Swamp Rat Camp Tramp the same way and it has yet to fail. In the remote even that it does fail, the warranty covers it.

If you check out the Swamp rat site, there is a cutaway photo of the tang, and one side is radiused, while the other is square.

Welcome to Bladeforums! If wood splitting is on the agenda, and Himalayan Imports Ang Khola will do the trick quite nicely. They also have an unconditional warranty, and they will honor it. They have a forum here in the Makers/Mfgs section if you want to check them out. Swamp Rat and Busse have bulletproof reputations as well.

You should contact Cold Steel about this and get a new Recon Scout if they're still making them or at least 50% refund. Splitting logs still falls into "normal use" catogory so it looks like your Recon S might have been defective or something. I've split tons of logs with SRK and ka-bar both of whom have never failed me. Pounded the living crap out of them too.
Hope it works out for ya.

yep, get a refund then get a Camp Tramp...mine has not failed me under similar circumstances...

Get a Himalayan Imports khukuri if you like to use a knife to split wood. I use mine for just that purpose, and if you ever break it, it will get replaced free.

A knife built like the Recon Scout should ignore such work, yours was either flawed steel or improper heat treatment. Yes one of the Swamp Rat blades will easily handle this with no problem. However this type of work can be done with *far* slimmer knives which are *much* cheaper than the Recon Scout, I have done with with 1/8" and 1/16" blades for extended periods of time. Jim Aston has done lots of this type of work as well with butcher knife class blades.

I broke a brand new SRK during some testing. About an inch off the tip. They don't bend at all apparently. If they bend in the video I wonder if it may be a rigged test. Maybe they bend them before heat treat or something. I don't know. I might have had a bad one too.

I broke the tip off a Trailmaster awhile back, it took a significant set before breaking. The problem with Cold Steel though mainly is that the construction of the knives isn't very consistent, they don't make knives themselves and Carbon V isn't a specific steel (from what has been said on the forums) so what you get can vary quite a lot depending on what it is made from and how it was made.
