Broke the tip of my Delica :(

Dropped my Delica at home today, yes, I fumbled-fingered it

and of course, being the lightweight, it landed tip-down on the tiled floor. It broke the first 1/8 tip off of it. I love carrying my Delica but I have dropped it before at work and have just been lucky that it didn't hit tip first. For the record I work at an autoparts store and end up with oil and grease on my hands frequently (from customers starters, alternators, etc that they bring in for core trade-in) My question is: is Spyderco still working on beefing up the tips of the Delica/Endura pair? The reason I am asking is that I don't mind buying a new knife in five or six years (or longer) when I wear it out, but I've only had this one about a year. (Just got it broken in really good too!!) I tried to re-profile the tip, but I'm just not that good at it. I love my Delica, I can draw it, cut something, and have it back in my pocket (all one handed!!) before most people even know it was there! I've tried other knives and am currantly carrying a medium tanto voyager, but it just doesn't feel the same as my Delica did. (Thumbstuds and pointy pocket-clip) I want another Delica, but I don't want to be afraid of breaking the tip of another one!

PS: I am the manager of this parts store and I got my assistant-manager hooked on Spydies as well, he has an Endura, a Native, and a Delica. Guess what? He broke the tip off of his Delica about 2 weeks ago. Luckily a friend of his was in town visiting from Florida and he re-profiled the edge for my assistant.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Maybe you could cover the tile with carpet, and put fatigue mats everywhere at work? Then a drop would be insignificant.

Or maybe try the Walker ltwt? Much more substantial tip.

Good luck!

I know it's not the same as the Delica, but how about a Rescue Jr.?
There's no way you will break that tip off.

Hi Flinx. Sorry for the mishap. glad it missed your foot?

If you send it off to Spyderco, they'll retip it for you and get it back to you pronto.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. But I really don't like the Rescue JR 'cause it has a fully serrated blade. Just not into serrations right now. And again, thank you Sal, for answering one of my posts directly, I don't think that anything can be done to save the knife, because I tried to reprofile the tip myself and just ended up doing more harm than good. I have another Delica that I bought a few monthes ago just for such an emergency, but I'm just concerned with the issue of the tip strength. I remember reading a post about this in which you (Sal) said that Spyderco was looking at a couple of different solutions for this problem. One was (I believe) re-designing the tip to make it a little stronger, the other was to drop the hardness of the ATS-55 to make it a little less brittle. (I think) I tried the search function to see if I could find the post in which you addressed this Sal, but I couldn't find it. Thats why I posted this, just to see if the new Delica (2000?)'s have these refinements yet. There is a store in town that has a couple of these new Delicas in stock. I know they are the newer versions because they have the re-enforced clip-well, and the Boye cut-out on the lock. Again, thanks to all who replied (especially Sal

PS: Sal, by "re-tipping" do you mean that they would re-grind the tip or what? Just curious.

Hi Flinx. The newest, newest Delicas will be flat ground in the area that is now hollow. this will give the model a stronger tip. They won't be hitting the stores for several months though.

Does that include the new blue handled Delica?
