I'm getting a lot of mileage out of my last purchase of Blackwood! It's so nice, I just can't resist it.
Here is my Chairman model that ended up coming off the anvil with a slight "Brokeback". I'll admit, it was late at night after a loooooooooong day in the shop and I just simply didn't notice it in the low light. (That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.)
Forged down from my 1 inch square 5160, and differentially heat treated. really nice temper line shows up well in the 800 satin finish.
Hot blued mild steel take-down fittings all contour filed to fit the sculpted Blackwood handle.
6 inch blade and right at 11 inches overall.
Thanks for sharing with me!

Karl I love the flow of all the work I've seen you produce. The fittings and handle material seem like they were grown from the same piece of wood.

Karl,

I like your work very much. In a piece like that, you'd get tremendous return on the $ by putting a thin bronze or sterling silver (no brass please) spacer between the handle and both the guard and buttplate. I'd recommend you size it a (small) fraction of an inch wider than the diameter of the two pieces that surround it. You will loose the flush transition, but you'll be protected against any change in handle material creating a sharp edge. It will also make the piece more visually interesting.

I gotta tell you, I really like the handle and guard on this piece. That asymmetrical sort-of-modified-fighter-double-guard really works to my eye. If it were a flat, oval guard I would be right with Joss in asking for a spacer between the guard and handle, but don't see it as necessary here. A spacer within the guard itself might provide a nice bright accent, though.

This handle would look awesome on the end of an 11" camp knife blade, IMHO.
