My wife and I took 3 of our sons to the Indiana Dunes Sunday for a short hike, just 'cause we were itching to get outside. There is something soothing about the waves crashing on the beach, and despite the small amount of snow and cold breeze, it was a great day. Until we decided to go back to the van. We were almost there, just had a little gate to step around and down a small incline, and then she slipped and yelped out. I looked down at her ankle, and it looked pretty bad. Her foot was sideways, and looked shifted to the right. it looked awful! Fortunately, we were in sight of the road, and I was able to get someone to help me carry her to the van. We got her to the hospital in Michigan City (there were no "H" signs to show the way.
I had to ask directions), about 10 miles down the road from where we were. The doctor said she managed to break both bones just above the ankle, and after we get home (we live accross the state), she will probably need surgery. The staff was very kind and helpful.
She thought it was funny that after climbing sand dunes for a couple hours, she gets hurt in sight of a paved road, on a minor incline. We were lucky we weren't deeper in the woods, or on the other side of the dunes. Could have been tricky to get her out. My main concern was swelling, and her losing circulation to her foot, as bad as the injury looked. But she never experienced numbness or anything, just pain.
It's really nice at the dunes, but it's not exactly isolated, what with Chicago, Gary, Michigan City, and the nuclear power plant in the vincinity. Even at that, if she had been alone, or we had both been hurt, we could have frozen to death. My sons, 14, 9 and 3, worked like champs, I'm very proud of them, and she kept her cool, even though she is more of an indoorsey person. When you see your family work well under adversity, it makes you feel truly blessed and thankful.
Oh, yeah, on the way back (about 120 miles), it started snowing, and 25 miles from home, my 9 year-old got sick and barfed in the van.
This was around midnight. Luck was not on our side yesterday.
