My 9 year old son got his collar bone broken, 30 seconds into his first wrestling match this morning. There were a bunch of no-shows, so they put a70 pound kid in his 55 pound group.

The ER gave us a sling and recommended a visit to an Orthipedic surgeon. We also picked up a fresh bottle of Tylenol for him, and are trying to apply ice every hour. He wasn't sure about attending practice tomorrow, but it's picture day, and I told him he'd be the center of attention. :D

So... Any advice? He seems to doing fine, as long as we keep the Tylenol going. I've already told him there's not much that can be done, except to take it easy and wait to heal up.

My friend was thrown from his mule and broke a collar bone .One the way to the hospital the EMT said if it's any consolation all three of my sons have broken theirs !!! Don't let him use it until it's fully healed , otherwise he'll have more problems !

I broke my shoulder wrestling. Its too bad for him he isnt at the age where girls are the main attraction because that would be a winner. Encourage him to keep going to practice and help out. Its really discouraging to be injured but if you keep him going he may find that its not all horrible.

Sorry about his injury. It sounds like you're doing everything right so my only advice is tell him to get all his broken bones out of the way before he's 30 because after that they'll never really heal. :)

Sorry to hear it. My son badly sprained his wrist in his first wrestling match when he was about that age. Unfortunately, it soured him to to the sport and he never went back even after he healed up.

It was my fault though. He was a big boy and the team went to a pretty big tournament right off the bat. With three weeks of practice, he wrestled a kid who had been wrestling for three years. I should have made sure that there was a novice division before I let him go.

Oldest daughter cracked hers. Followed the suggestions you were given and it all worked out fine.

Back 'in the day' -- a very OLD day indeed -- I took out my right clavicle playing football. REAL bad. Spent 6 months in a weird cast while the bone tried hard to rebuild itself. That took lots of painkiller.

But even that went away.

Now, I'll never look good in a bikini again...but the right arm works just fine. I boldly predict your son will knit well, and more quickly than this old scientist did.:D

And in the meantime, best wishes -- and a certain amount of ice cream -- will make it all go down better.

We just got back from practice/team pictures. I was a mother hen, trying to keep the rambunctious other kids from running into him. He got his picture taken with the sling on. They had a new thing, where you could add a second person to the picture (buddy picture), so he got a pic taken with his best friend.

After pictures, which took an hour to get finished (rambunctious kids...:thumbdn:), I went and got get dinner while mom stayed with him. He stayed with his group and listened whenever the coaches talked, then sat in the stands while the group worked out/trained.

ALL the coaches talked with him tonight (it's a pretty big club, ~125 kids and ~15 coaches) I think they were impressed that he was there and happy that he's going to stick it out and come back next year. He'd already made a name with the coaches, because he'd always helped with the mats after practice (I strongly encouraged him the first few times, but now he looks on it like it's a duty to help out)

Thanks for the kind words and advice, I read them off to him tonight (A couple of the coaches told him that he needs to work his arm, just a little bit, to be able to put it around the girls sholders at the movies!:D (He knew they were picking on him, because girls still have cooties for a couple more years yet!)

Don/Grim,
What group does he compete with? Is it the SPCAA? I have a son (7yrs) who is in soccer, and another (5yrs) who is interested in joining a sport, but doesn't seem that excited about soccer. Wrestling might be the thing for him. (He calls it "rasselling")

I'm just up the road from Riverside, in Platte Woods, off of Barry Road. Shoot me an email, if you want.

Daniel

I've had a sore collarbone for about the past fifteen years. When it gets really cold I get severe arthritis pain in it. I don't understand why, I never broke it though.
