Broken CUDA MAXX thumbstuds/bladestops

My Camillus Cuda Maxx 5.5 is on its third set of thumbstuds/bladestops. They have a tendency to break upon opening with the intended "quick flicks" method. Without the bladestops in place, the blade will flop around in the open position, rendering it unusable. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem, and if so, how you have solved it. Now that Camillus is out of business, sending in the broken studs for replacement is no longer an option. Thanks.

I am pretty sure someone on this forum (STR ?) would be able to make replacement studs if you break them again.
You must realize that such a large blade is creating a tremendous force on the studs when flipping.

As I never experienced your problem, I don't know what advice to give you to solve the problem, except to QUIT flipping so forcefully.
I don't intend to be a smart -$$ , just giving common sense sincere advice.

I have never had that problem with my Maxx or my Aftermath. As far as getting new studs. Check out www.knifekits.com . That site is all cool stuff designed by Darrell Ralph. (I think). They have all sorts of studs, washers, pocket clips and such to take care of your Maxx.
Good Luck:D

I've not noticed that either. If you're on your third one, I guess we can't say you got a lemon.
I got nothing, but good luck. I love my Maxx.

I don't think I flip it anymore forcefully than it is intended to be, just sufficiently to get it to open and lock securely.

Thanks for the link, that is just the sort of thing I was looking for.

That would be not flipping it at all. Knives aren't designed to be opened that way.

While this is true of most knives, Camillus personnel posted in their forum here that owners of the CUDA MAXX knives were supposed to use the little "guards" to start the blade out of the hilt and then to flip it. That is, according to them, the way in which the knife was designed to be openned. And the truth is that there really is no other way to open one.

This knife in on my list of "things to buy when I win the lottery..".
If the studs break when the knife is flipped open, does that mean the knife stops might fail if the opened knife is used to deliver even a moderate "chop"?

It shouldn't be possible to break them just by opening the knife --what are they made of, brittlium??? Rather than keep replacing them with the same brittlium I suggest making or getting somebody to make replacements out of a more suitable material. Just don't hire a glassblower to do it and you should be fine.

ld57 got there first cuz I was wondering the same thing. I do not "flip" my Cuda (or any of my other knives for that matter) unless I have a need to ... so I am not sure how strong the thumbstuds / bladestops are. I would think it should take A LOT of force or A LOT of flipping to cause this type of problem. I think hard, frequent flipping is also a factor in the wear on liner lock "lock-up" and proper fit. Snap it hard if ya' need to ... but don't if ya' don't. KFLEISIG ... good thread.

i used to flip mine all the time with nary a problem(both custom and production), other than they did come loose before i loctited them. i see no reason at all to replace them with anything. they are not fragile/brittle or anything else,

this isnt a liner lock its a frame lock and darrel ralph has posted that all of his knives are designed with inertia opening in mind and it wont hurt them a bit so i wouldnt worry about wearing the lock.

Cougar , I have looked everywhere and can find no references to this
Brittlium you speak of. Is this a new type of sub-par steel I am not aware of ?

We did get a bad batch of blade stops, I suspect they were not tempered enough.
You are really one lucky guy to get 3 of them!!
I open all the Maxx knives super hard (including the 7 inch) & have never broken one.

If you can't find replacements at knifekits.com, I'm sure Darrel Ralph will sell you a set.

Gotta love the MAXX!

My Camillus Cuda Maxx 5.5 (CMCD-CU2272) has the same problem with KFLEISIG! The thumb-studs have broken while I open it with the intended "quick flicks" method over hundreds times. After exam the parts, I found that the thread of a screw was damaged……So I have to order new parts to replace it……
