Hi I have a broken Endura. It is currently missing the sideclip(I don't care too much about this). The first inch or so of the knife broke off when a friend of mine was pulling out a staple with it. I was wondering if I could send in the knife to get the blade replaced, and if it is possible how much will it be?

myguess is it's not cost efficient to replace a blade on an FRm model.

Well John, it seems to me (and Mr. Finkenstein) that the best idea for you would be to go to Spyderco's contact page: http://spyderco.com/contact/ and e-mail their customer service department. Because the blade is held on with pins and not screws, replacement may not be your best bet as DaveH said. Spyderco will re-grind the blade, but you will be left with substantially less knife. The re-grinding starts at about $20, and could get more expensive from there. Hope this helps.

To my knowledge, Spyderco does NOT replace blades. They don't keep a stock of replacement blades on hand, that would require space and money tied up in inventory. They MAY simply replace the knife, but I'm not sure.

It'd be cheaper to simply buy another one, for a street price around $40

Won't know until you try though. Good luck.

What kind of staple was it? I used my Pacific to remove several dozens staples from the floor when we got new carpet with no damage at all. That must've been a beast.

Generally, blades from knives made in Japan are not replaceable (i.e. the Endura). Blades from knives made in the US are sometimes replaceable.

I can't help wondering if you beat the crap out of the dude who used your knife to attempt removal of staples capable of breaking an inch of the tip off your Endura.

I don't imagine that many people here would be very sympathetic if you yourself had done it -- but if it was a friend who did it, I guess it's just a lesson in never ever letting anyone borrow a knife from you if you care about it, because this is what they do. Foolish things. Things people do when they are using someone else's tool and figure they don't have to care about it.

A genuine staple remover can probably be had from any of numerous "dollar stores," and save your knives from disaster. Even if the tip hadn't broken off, the edge probably would have suffered some regardless, so it's worth investing in the right tool for the job.

Sorry about the damage to your knife. You should probably hit your friend up for the cost of replacing it. A good friend would have done so without having to be asked, in my view. But I would not stand on ceremony: if he didn't offer on his own, I'd politely demand it -- unless I had told him, "Sure, go ahead, remove those staples with this knife of mine."

I'm really impressed that it broke where it did (which must have required a huge amount of force) and the pivot remained intact.

Whether or not its knife abuse depends upon the type of staple. I pull staples out of paper all day with my knives and never broken a tip. You have to be careful not to bend a razor edge, but in no way should 1" break off. However, if you were pulling 1" wood staples out of hardwood, then it's knife abuse. If it was paper, send it in to Spyderco, they may replace it if the break shows a problem with the steel. If was a wood staple, send it in and Spyderco will regrind the tip for about $20; see their website. You'll then have a delica blade in an endura handle :) but you'd be better off buying a new one.

Peacefuljeffery, it seems possessions are more important than friends to you. Friends are people and they can make mistakes and they can be too poor to make restitution. They can still be friends. If you keep a scorecard with your friends, you'll never have one very long.

Back an "inch or so" you are at full thickness, I watched an Endura crack in that region, I would curious to know exactly what kind of staple was removed.
