Well, I would NOT call myself a "medical expert", but I am a Radiologic Technologist (what most of you folks call an "X-ray Tech").
The others are correct in that you cannot tell if it's broken unless you get some films.
But if you are not diabetic, and if you have no history of joint or bone diseases or disorders, and if there is no discoloration, and if there is no numbness or unusual sensations (tingling, burning, etc...), and if it is'nt dislocated or "out-of-place" then you would probably be fine if you just treated as if it were broken (what your doctor would call a "non-displaced fracture").
You can buy the same aluminum finger-splint that doctors use and shape it over the finger, and bandage it to the fingers beside of it (depending on the finger). The aluminum brace will give it form and protect it from impacts, and binding it to the other fingers will limit its mobility (to keep you from moving it around).
Then just try to not use it and give it time to heal.
But if you do this, inspect it daily, and if it becomes discolored, or worsens in any way, go see your doctor or go to the ER.
And remember, you follow this advice at your own risk.
I am not a doctor.
ERDept is a forum member who is an RN in a ER.
And PCNorton is a forum member who is a PA.
Maybe they will chime it?
Good luck,
Allen.
