Broken Hand Sucks

I lost my temper a week ago, and hit a wall that was a whole lot more solid than I expected. I broke the bone behind my pinkie. The doctor recommeded surgery, but I don't have the money, so it will probally heal wierd. My problem is I have to now carry left handed, which is just wierd! no more quick opening for me. And to add gasoline to a man on fire, I just pulled my Openiel out of the wash, it now has a lot more "individuality". My only advice is to mark out the plaster walls and studs in your house ahead of time! Thanks for reading my rant, now I'm going to go and sulk. p.s. typing one handed is a bummer!:jerkit:

Sorry to hear.
For what it's worth, the temper does tend to mellow with age. I used to hit inanimate objects when I got angry. Now I just cuss. Quietly, if my wife is anywhere around.

See what you can do to afford the surgery. Many hospitals will work out payment plans. We make our living with our hands. Do not risk them.
Vaya con Dios.

+1 Im older now and it isnt so easy to heal. cussing seems to work pretty well now. Roger on the wife not hearing!

Man, sorry to hear that. It's a bummer! :(

I would definitely try to take knarfeng's advice on the surgery tho... Don't want a messed up hand forever!

Don't get mad...get even. Nah, just joking. Getting pissed off and breaking stuff (especially yourself) just amounts to medical bills and more problems than needed. Anger management is in order.

Live and learn.

And hit with the first two knuckles first. Your healthcare insurance will thank you.

Sorry to hear about the hand. It does suck...I've been there...

Try and move to a cast that let's your thumb free if available. You get a ton of the use of your hand back with just the thumb. I learned to type with my left hand and my right thumb to the tune of 40 WPM.

A few weeks ago, I seriously sprained my weak hand wrist. It really sucked. Couldn't open anything other than a tactical type lock knife.
Yup, those sort of injuries do suck.

Hey Michael...

Man that sucks..
Hope you heal well and quickly...

As for Now being Left Handed..

Welcome to the Right side.. :)

I'd keep my hand raised up above the wrist as much as possible. I'd get an AO for the left and voula.

Thank you for sympathy. I don't have any money for the surgury, let alone an AO! The doc said that the knuckle may just look kinda funny, and my pinkie will be a bit bent. I can live with that, and don't think it will affect my work (machine builder). It's funny how much you can regret something that didn't solve anything in the first place! My wife reminds me of that often:rolleyes: .

Back in my early 20's, if temper got the better of me I always would pick up a handy object and send it on a flight across the room. Usually costing me $$$.
No matter how you vent temper/anger it usually end up costing $$ in the end result.

:D :D :D

PS: try mastering cussing, its cheap

I used to curse in Russian, since it didn't bother people hearing what they didn't understand. One rainy evening, I cursed at a cab driver who splashed me as he raced by, and the little old lady next to me nearly fainted.

Now I don't know what to say !!!

I, too, am sorry to hear about the finger damage.

Something similar happened to me about 20 years ago. A lab accident involving an expensive piece of laser crystal...and my right thumb. Hurt like the devil -- and fortunately my military medical 'insurance' was sufficient to repair the damage.

I was one-handed for about three months. A real pain for the first few weeks, especially since I was a lab physicist then. But the more I worked with my left hand, the better things became. By the time the right was back in action, I was pretty-near ambidextrous! And that has truly been useful, professionally and personally.

For one thing, I now type like a machine gun!

Hang in there and best of luck.

OUCHY! I am sorry that you broke your hand. I hope it heals quickly for you, and the pain dissipates even faster.

Yeah, sorry to hear that man...really sucks...I often try to flip my balisong with my left hand, but I just can't get a hang of it, it just feels to weird to me...I guess if anything ever happened to my right hand I would be lost, and as much as I LOVE my knives, I do more inportant things with my right hand than use knives...lol:rolleyes: :D

Isn't that what is refered to as a boxer break? I think it is a fairly common break and I know a few people who have done it without surgery. And I think the main thing was that the knuckle was pushed further back once it was healed.

However, I am definitely not a Dr. and if he recommended surgery I'm sure thats your best bet. As other have said you work with your hands and you don't want to risk a permanent injury. Of course I'm sure they could always go back in and re-break it in the future and set it, but that just sounds painful...

Sorry to hear it.

I can't even razz you about hitting walls being dumb because I did the exact same thing 2 years ago. The difference being in my rage I hit wood paneling, which I just happened to forget had a cinderblock wall behind it.

I went to the ER, and had to come back a few days later after the swelling went down so it could be set.

If you don't get surgery (you should if you can at all), make sure when they cast it up that they extend the cast out onto your pinkie a bit. Mine wasn't and it didn't heal right because I had too much mobility, I now have a calcium depost right behind my knuckle and my range of motion with the pinkie isn't what it used to be. The knucle actually is tilted down towards the palm some, I'm actually worried if I ever hit anything again with real force it's going to rebreak because of the slight angle.

If you can get the surgery in any way possible, get it.
