Now that I've got this grindie thingie, I want to grind some stuff with it. Does anyone have a beat up old khuk or other fixed blade they'd like to sell? Or if you have one you'd like some work done on free of charge (keep in mind I'm still learning, so no guarantees) send me an e-mail and maybe we can work something out. I have a large piece of walnut here that I can make handles from (thanks hollowdweller!). Thanks for your help everyone. :)

Roadrunner, I have a 20" Kobra I want lightened. The blade is my "Pappy Special". He liked the 20" length for snakes and light blades. The Kobra is Sher built and a little slow. I want two lightening cuts on each side of the forward section of blade. I've considered doing this with my grinder, but would have to hold the blade in my hand as the wheel spins- and I see disaster.

If you could make these cuts I could repair most finish damage.

If you send me the knife and a diagram of what you want done I think I can handle that munk. I just ordered a ton of belts so I should be able to clean up the scratches as well (I need all the practice I can get!). :)

You mean I can send you my knives and you will sharpen them and then i won't have to continue to curse myself out for not having the vaguest idea what in the world I am doing with all this diamond sharpener thingie and the blade and all the other stuff

Hmm, I didn't think this many people logged in in the middle of the day. Tell you all what; I'm getting ready to go to bed, since I have to work tonight. I'm getting up around 8:30 or so. I'll take any reasonably sized projects e-mailed to me before then. I'll see how long those take before I get in too deep. So get in while the gettings good.

I'd like to see pics and a tutorial on reprofiling a karda.

I want to reprofile a lot of my kardas; sharp torture knives are a good thing.

note the use of the semi colon. :D

Roadrunner,

Are you able to work on smallish blades? I managed to muck up the edge of this nice little puukko recently. Here's what it looked like before:

After trying some woodwork with it, the edge got torn up and the tip broken off. Seems like the joints between many of the pattern-welds failed along the hardened edge (too brittle).

Since it's already damaged anyway, I wouldn't mind you trying you skills on it. If it works, good for me because a not-inexpensive custom knife will have been restored. If it doesn't, it won't be any worse off than how it is now...

Hi John,

I haven't taken a picture of the after-damage blade yet, but you can get an idea of the damage by picturing a jagged saw pattern along the edge, and a small triangular portion of the tip broken off. It's incidents like this that convince me that I'm much more the knife collector than the knife user! :(

I forgot to mention, the blade's only about 2-1/4" long, pretty short (~5-1/2 overall). Hopefully Roadrunner's grinder -- if he's willing to tackle this project -- can accomodate it.

It is a really pretty piece, so I want to salvage it if I can.

interested more in handle work or blade work, Kurt?

How do you feel about making an edge on a 21" chit?
like to keep it pretty at the same time. artistic freedom all the same.

Just from the response so far sounds like there's a heck of a business opportunity for somebody to do stuff like the above, Fixing handles, sharpening and stuff like Terry Sisco used to do.

OK, I'm up now. Bruise, consider it done. Give me a few weeks to get it put together.

ruel, looks like a good project. I'll save that one for last so I have more practice before tackling it. From your description I don't think it should be too difficult.

Dan, I'm interested in a little of both. I ordered belts for sanding and grinding, so it should work well for either.

Hey Ruel, you didn't show us that in your last visit to KL. It's a beauty! :)

* Golok -- Yes I did! You even took a picture of it!

* Kurt,

Cool, I'll shoot you an email. ;) I really don't mind if you use it as one of the "testers" -- it deserves a little punishment for breaking on me so easily! :grumpy:

And let me also give you a preliminary thanks for making this offer -- you're definitely one of the good guys.
