Here's the ram's horn stockman folder that we did with Ontario (built by Queen). This one was sent back to me by a gentleman that prefers not to be named due to his position in the "knife world." When he sent it, the main blade back spring was broke. I opened the package this morning and tried to open the second blade and that spring broke as well. A US Marshal buddy of mine told me that the collector knives he picked up for his dad also broke. Anyone know of anyone that will fix this knife (not Queen or Ontario).

As a side note, we fully intend to have some Ontario RAT knives at Blade show so people can see the difference in quality for themselves. We will also have this folder there for folks to see. At that time if someone can take it with them and fix it then that would be great.

Muskrat Man on KF does that sort of slipjoint work, and a great job too! But I'm not sure what it would cost?

that is crazy Jeff. A properly treated spring should NOT have that problem EVER.

Someone needs some QC training....

We've had several of these that did this so I'm assuming it may have just been that particular batch since we haven't heard of any problems on the Rail Splitter. Regardless, I agree with you that someone needs to at least implement a QC program to verify quality, but then again, look at the continued problems from the pirated RAT knives they're selling. They can't even get a grind right so I would figure anything really technical like heat treat is out the window nowadays. Don't know what happened to Ontario but they just don't seem to give a damn anymore.

That's what happens when the bottom line is the bottom line.

Fortunately, there are other American companies out there that DO give a damn.

Thanks for all you do Jeff and Mike!

Will there be pictures for us not going to blade? :D

Yes, we will take lots of photos.:) The above folder makes four known slip joint knives Ontario/Queen made for us that have had broken back springs. I know one was sent back to Queen to be repaired but I don't know if he got it back. If you have had any problems with your collector stockman or railspitter Queen did for us in the ram's horn let us know. Mike

Jeff, my ram's horn folder is soldiering on just fine, been in my front right trouser pockets for several months and no problems so far. Question. Have you considered making say a Mountain Man type folder, with rams horn handle slabs? Take Care, John.

Will Ontario be at Blade?

Yes, Ontario will be at Blade in Atlanta. Bob Breton will be there for Ontario and Jenny a sales rep for Queen. Probably a sale rep or two for Ontario but they are independent contractors-- not employees of Ontario. I do not believe the CEO, Nick Trbovich Jr or his brother, Ken will be there. Usually they are set up in one of the main aisle back to back with Busse knives.

Hi John, there have been about 4 of these (I think) that the springs have broken on out of 500, so that's not too bad but still a bitch if yours is the one it happens to ;) As far as doing anything else in the traditional folder line, we're pretty much out of that game for now since we won't do business with another Trbovich company again due to them stealing from us . The rumor was that Bob Breton was going to buy Queen from Nick (Servo). I heard he had the funding lined up with investors and was even thinking about moving it to Franklinville, but Nick never would make a decision on whether he would sell it. Queen is actually a decent company since Nick doesn't have his hands in running it too much. So, if Bob does manage to pull off buying Queen then it would be a step in the right direction.

i've got a rat stockman number 17 what is the number of the broken stockman in the photo, perhaps the faulty knives came off the line together.

Couldn't tell you. I just put it in the mail box headed to Rowen manufacturing so they can check heat treat on the broken springs. I didn't even notice what serial number it was.

I've got a Rail Splitter - I love it, but admittedly don't use her much. My Model1 gets plenty of use, though, and is holding up well. Can't wait for the USA Model1. Hopefully the Rowen guys will be able to fix it as well?

What ever happened to resolve the broken stockman? I am interested in this as I have both the stockman and the railsplitter.

That QC sucks hind tit on a boar hog. I'm glad I do business with RAT Cutlery instead.

the spring on mystockman #89 just broke on the clip blade, I carry it in my pocket but hardly use it and never put it under stress. I am going to send it to queen for repair and hope they have taken some steps to remove this apparent flaw in the spring.

I just acquired #147 railsplitter in early May. I did learn of the earlier stockman, but sounds like I better hold off on trying to find one of those if they are having spring failures.
