being the weekend, figured I'd ask here, in case I get an answer I can have it in the mail first thing Monday morning without calling CS (which hasn't been so great, I've read)

Anyway, I gave a buddy of mine a PT 540 a while back, and he managed to snap half the pliers off doing his job as a network tech/wireless installer. Do I send in the whole tool, just the head section, or can I just get a new head sent to me without a return?

you can send the knife in through the normal warrantee dep. address -it is in the paperwork that comes with your SOG. you could find it online too. Just send it in to lindsay and write a description of the problem.

title the letter "attention: warrantee"

If you want to send it in to a better person, Chris at SOG will probably help you even thought it is not exactly his job. It might take him a little longer than lindsay IDK. If you send it to him, mention that you found him on B.F.

Here is his address:

Chris Cashbaugh
SOG Knives
6521 212th St SW

Good luck.

Wow - first time I am seeing a broken SOG multitool! These are made in USA and have a lifetime warranty so contact Chris@SOG or the warranty department. They'll help you in a jiffy.

All you need to prove is that you didn't abuse the tool (ie no hammering, heavy prying or dismantling the tool) and your tool should be replaced with a new one.

Never had any problems with my Swiss Army or Wenger multitools.
Have avoided Leatherman due to breakage; now also include SOG?

Also, what did SOG say regarding being able to fix it; seems like a large break like that would lead me to lose confidence when I really needed to rely on my equipment.

It's not that big of a deal. Every major brand has shown broken plier heads; all the current manufacturers make them the same way anyway. (Investment casting + machining).

There may have been a flaw in the cast, I dunno, but this is a big tool with long handles and reduction gears. My friend said it himself, he could generate a lot of power squeezing down on the handles. He was attempting to loosen a bolt/nut, so he told me, so no hammering or prying. I'll wait a little while for Chris on Monday before heading to the PO, in case they don't need the whole tool.

I also have to send in a Kershaw for replacement, also something I gave to the same friend after I decided it wasn't for me. He cracked the blade on that one from the thumbstud to the spine.

I have one of the SOG multitools myself. Very heavy duty tool and I've used them for cutting wires, heavy twisting and other duties.

The only way they could have been broken was if the plier was moving in a 90 degree manner to the rotation of the nut, ie trying to pry the nut out. That would have created more stress on the lower tooth and less stress on the upper tooth and hence the breakage. There might have been a micro or nano break/fracture in the metal and the whole piece gave under all that pressure.

Even so I don't see how that can be seen as abuse. Let's see what SOG has to say.. :)

This does happen from time to time. I have seen things like this before and we typically just replace them. Unfortunately, that product does not fall under our warranty program. that is a product we make for Paladin and they are responsible for warranty issues with it, as it is their product that they sell and market. Yo can find their contact info here - http://www.powerplaytools.com/home.php

However, if they are unresponsive in the issue let us know.
