I am thinking about purchasing a sam mai 3 trail master and I want to know if anyone has broken or seperated the 3 layers of steel? How are they connected to each other? How strong is this bond?

Other will be along shortly but I have never heard of any problems with that issue.

I have never heard of a laminated blade seperating, but I suppose if poorly done it could happen. The layers are forge welded together, they are not put together with a bonding agent.

Cold Steel use the wrong terminology when the call their blades San Mai. San Mai is considered to be a short form of the term honsanmai-gitae, which is a Japanese blade lamination technique that uses four pieces of steel. The Cold Steel blades are laminated, but not honsanmai.

If im not mistaken the layers are welded together the same way that damascus is (sort of). If they were going to delaminate they would have done it in heat treatment. Usually any problems in a weld will show up in HT. I dont think the lack of a bonding agent should change this.

These things have to be made in large sections in a rolling mill .While it would be possible to have a poor weld it would be highly improbable !!
