Broken Scissors Spring - A Few Questions

Got a good deal on a Vic SAK. It's in mint condition otherwise, but the scissors spring was bent when I got it. When I tried to bend it back into shape, it snapped.

1. It's a Victorinox Marlboro Outdoorsman (91mm or 3.5"), so I assume I need a medium scissors spring. Correct?

2. Just punch out the old and press in the new, right? Any tricks or tips I need to know about?

3. Is this a good place for the parts? http://www.swissknifesupplies.com/

Is there a better parts supplier? Swiss Knife Supplies is the only one I've found so far that carries the medium spring AND the mini-screwdriver AND doesn't charge an arm-and-a-leg for shipping. Only $1.75 shipping for orders under $10. The site looks updated, and no red flags are going up for me.

Have you seen the parts section on the vic website? Not sure about shipping though.

Yeah, they have the spring for only 50 cents but no mini-screwdriver (that I can see). They also want $5.95 to ship that tiny little spring.

Seems like I saw parts on the sosak shop. lemme check for ya.

Edit: I cant find the spring, sorry.):

Is there a Victorinox dealer in your neck of the woods? Some dealers have replacement parts (including scissor springs and small screwdrivers) under the counter. You might ask the salesperson if they have replacement parts. I used to buy replacement parts on Ebay until I realized that I could pick up the parts locally.

Here's a listing on Ebay for 4 springs for the about the same price (after shipping) as 1 from swissknifesupplies:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Spring-4-each-for-Large-Victorinox-knife-NEW-38410_W0QQitemZ270278534430

He doesn't have mini screwdrivers listed but you might email him to see if he has some in stock.

I don't know him personally and neither me nor my friends profit from his sales. This isn't an endorsement but I've bought a few things from him and received good service.

You might try asking a local shop first though. They usually don't advertise that they have replacement parts but they often have them tucked away under the counter.

I am pretty sure you need a large spring. 91mm is the largest scissors size there is (111mm uses the same scissors), small is for 58mm, and medium is for 74mm (e.g., Executive). I may be wrong, but before you buy, make sure you are getting the right size, or get both sizes.

Thanks. I actually emailed him a couple of hours ago and asked about the screwdriver.

Great minds think alike? :p

I'm pretty sure the 91mm knives take the medium.

Edited to add: Actually it's not that clear. Some sites say the medium fits knives 74mm to 91mm. Others say the large fits knives 91mm and longer.

Ugh.

You could just buy a Wenger and not have to worry about those pansy little Vic springs.:p

Anyway, I'm sure I've got a spring laying around. I'll check in the morning. If I do, your welcome to it. No screwdrivers though.

I think you're right. I eyeballed a Climber and an Outrider. Scissors and spring looked the same to me.

Thanks.

I found the large springs 6 for a buck locally just now. Same place had the mini-screwdriver.

I'd mention the store, but I nearly got dinged in W&S recently for mentioning the same store.

Do you have a knife store around you that sells Vics? The guy who owns the one I frequent has one of the kits with a whole bunch of each part in it. He usually charges me $1 when he has to replace a spring or give me a new pin, tweezer or screwdriver.

That's an excellent deal. In normal use, 6 pieces is a lifetime supply of springs... and all for $1! :D

I have lots of parts now.

6 large springs for $1.
6 large tweezers for $4.
6 large toothpicks for $2.
2 mini-screwdrivers at $3.50 each.

I'll be happy to reveal the source by email or PM if anyone needs parts.

Scissors repaired!

FYI, the 3.5" knives do take the large springs, large tweezers, and large toothpicks. I believe they are the smallest Vics that do so.
