broken selector knife

I finally am getting around to sending 2 bucks in for repair. Both have broken tips. :(

One is a standard 110, which I bought back in 1980. It broke the 3rd year I had it.

The other is a "Selector" 428x with the removable 42805+ blade. I don't remember where this one came from, I beleive it was a gift. Anyway the tip broke off in the breast plate of a buck this year.

I looked over the buck site and did not see the knife, and read in here that it was only made for a few years.

I am just curious if anyone knows if they will replace the blade on the discontinued knive, or will the just send me a different knife.

Also is this a knive worth keeping (as a collectable) since it is no longer made? Is it more valuable?;)

The Selector (IMHO) is defintely a "keeper" - and you are right, it was only made for a short time and has been discontinued. Before you send it in for repair you may want to contact Joe Houser who is one of this forums moderators. He is also Director of Consumer Relations for Buck. Explain to him that you do not want the knife swaped out, but would like it repaired. He understands the "collectablility" of the knives and will work you with to make sure you get your knife repaired and back to you.

When contacting Joe, please keep in mind that the plant has been on "holiday shutdown" since before Christmas and January 6, 2003 will be their first day back to work. I am sure there wil be a ton of email and messages waiting for Joe so it may take a couple days for him to get back to you.

Hope this helps!!!

Jumpnjohn, the Selector is a good knife, does the model you have hold two blades, one permanent and one removeable? Buck can probably replace the permanent blade, if its the removeable blade I doubt they have any more. If they don't drop me a line, I may be able to help.

If it is the tip of the removable blade, and Tom, or the factory can't help you replace it, I have seen more than the average amount of Selector Blades on eBay the past month or so. You may want to keep en eye out over there...

Thanks for all your replys.

The broken one is the non-removable one.

However I may consider getting some of the other "optional" or "selectoral"??? blades. Give me an idea of some of these might run if anyone has any they would like to part with.

BTW..A question  on the other broken plain 110...is it an option to have it replaced with the new anniversary model. It looks sweet compaired to the one I have (the ..110..) but would be my user for field dressing which sees allot of use one week a year. ;)

Buck should be able to replace the blade on your Selector. Buck can also install a BG-42 blade instead of the standard blade. I would replace the blade in the 110, I don't like to get rid of a tool that I trust if it can be fixed. Either way I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Joe is out today as we had a serious wind storm last night and he lost power and some trees...such is the price you pay for living out in the boonies...

I will email this link to Joe so he can follow up.

We have discontinued the centennial versions of the 110 the end of november last year when we ran out of medallions. I am sure he can find one and take care of you.

jumpinjohn,
I can say that there is a very good cahnce that I can locate the parts to repair your Selector. I do not get too many requests about the two bladed version and would bet that it will become somewhat collectible as folks discover how few there are "out there".
Feel free to send both knives in and we will make them right!
Take care,

Thanks so much.

I will send them in this week. Should I put to your attention, or just put some sort of note with them?

I will retire the the selector. It seems odd, that the demand for the two blades was never higher. Anyway keep up the great work there, it makes me feel good that your reputation for service and support is true, and so easily accessable.

I will never hunt again without a BUCK in my pocket. I'll never forget my 1st whitetail, when I was 16. I ran to it pulled out my "packistan", only to find I couldn't even cut a small piece of rope with it no matter how hard i tried. lol Luckily a stranger showed up, and dressed it out in a few minutes with his BUCK.
