Tom: That would be a good trick-I'd like to know that one myself. What I usually do, for small taps, is to tap them with a carbide tipped scriber (after grinding the broken surface smooth from both sides) Usually, you can shatter the tap and knock it out.
You can also try (gently) drilling the tap out with a small carbide drill. Touchy, touchy.
But, with any luck, wnough threads will stilkl be there when you're done.

Tom,
I think Darrel posted on that topic awhile back. It was an acid. Eats steel but won't hurt Ti. I just can't recall what acid it was.

Hey Darrel.

Soak it in Ferric Chloride for a day or so, it will eat the steel and not the Ti. I know there is an acid that works faster but for the life of me I cant remember which one it is... easiest meathod I can think of would be to hook it up to an anodizer and burn out the steel tap, I know it works on detent balls...

Hope it helps, I am pretty sure you have a radio shack there that you can get some ferric chloride from...

Tom,
Ferric cloride is also used to etch damascus. I've tried several different solutions and I like the ferric cloride the best. Happy Easter.

Works on ti fine . Most acid except a few will not effect the ti even when anodized .
Takes about a day for i to disolve the get a small scribe and clean the carbon ask out of it. I check it once in a while and clean away the ash so the acid can get to a new layer. A stiff brush will wask it carbon away..

Roll taps are the worst. They take a day and a half.. Regualr taps take a day or so..
depending on the strength of the acid..
Ferric I use 50 / 50 with water.
Coke work great for ano solution also ..
It last longer than anything I have used.
Most of the cleaner type solutions seem to in my shop get stronger and then after 30 days or so burn pits in the ti..

Good luck..

7 up does a good job for those who like to see the color... hehehhe I like the surprise
