Having just recently picked up the work sharp and reprofiling most of my knives to a convex edge I've been looking for a new strop so I can easily maintain the edge after use. Well I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a double sided brommeland gunleather 3x8 benchstrop pre loaded with black(course) compound on 1 side and green(fine) compound on the other.

First impressions of it are great, it's the ideal size for me, large enough to use as a bench strop(it'll work with the steele x stone holder) but still small enough that it can easily be throw in my pack for touch ups in the field. They also make a 2x6 pocket strop with rounded corners and a 1.5x4 I believe it is micro strop for even greater portability. The build quality is top notch and seems to be good quality leather. It's mounted flat, I couldn't feel and high spots on the mounting surface.

My old one and most of the ones you see online have an overall length of 12"+ due to the addition of an unnecessary handle, not so easy to throw a 15"strop in your bag. The leather was also poor quality and the mounting surface wasn't perfectly smooth so it didn't last long.

I'll update this the more I use it, and how it holds up, but as of now I'm really liking it. I quickly and easily touched up a couple knives last night. None could cut paper cleanly, but a few passes on the strop has them slicing phone book paper with a mirror shine.

If your looking for a new strop you should give this one a look, Google brommeland gunleather strop, and there produced by a fellow forum member here. Which means MADE IN THE USA!!!!

Nice find! Are these expensive?
The price varies a lil retailer to retailer, but I've seen em as low as $24 for the 2x6 pocket strop. Which is a good price considering I paid $35 for my old one on eBay and when it arrived it was merely crappy leather glued to a 1x4 that had a bumpy surface and a jacked up cut handle, and only lasted a few months.

Very pretty strop!

Do you store it in the plastic bag that it came in?

What method do you use to keep track of which side of the bag should face the green side of the strop?

How do you keep the sides of the bag from touching each other when you remove the strop?

In other words, what is preventing cross-contamination between the different compounds?

Yea I've been leaving it in the bag for now, how to prevent cross contamination is simple. You Sharpie a g on one side the bag or a b on the other...seems full proof lol

Got an untreated Brommeland Gunleather 6"x2" pocket strop some weeks ago and put DMT Diamond Paste on it. Leather quality is great, built quality is great, both surfaces are completely flat. A solid piece and it works great. Highly recommended.

Couldn't agree more, it's deff a quality constructed piece. Allot of people think a strop is a strop, which while that's true to an extent its the quality of leather used with the prefect flat mounting surface that stands this one apart. Your not gonna get quality that lasts like this from an eBay strop. Trust me I know first hand

don't temp me... damn... i haven't even converted/sharpened all the knives i own yet...
This is a prefect finishing touch after the work sharp...I've also found with the convex edge that after use a few passes on this strop has me shaving sharp again...unless you have managed to chip it of course.

Hmmmm.... When you remove the strop, do you put something into the bag to keep the sides from touching?
Keep in mind, you won't be able to 'see' the cross-contamination. Once the two sides of the bag come into contact with each other, and you slide the strop back in (keeping in mind the G and the B markings) those markings become meaningless.

You are much better off keeping the strop OUT of the bag, and hanging the strop so that the faces don't come in contact with anything. Then, at least, you'll be safe from cross-contamination... until the first time you forget to wipe your blade clean before switching sides... just like the rest of us have done. :)

Actually yea I have a piece of scrap leather I slide into it to keep it apart..I mainly kept bag for when I pack it..don't want compound all over my bag...I leave it out on the bench.

Just an update, I've been using this strop allot since I first got and I must say I'm still really liking it. The leather is top quality and holding up great.

The best thing about it for me is it's size, it's really convenient having a well made strop that is easily carried into the field. After a days worth of work batoning, chopping, and every other camp chore I simply pull this thing out and hit my blades on it a few times and there back to razor sharp. I definitely recommend this strop to anyone looking for one that's well made and easy to take with you. (While still being large enough to use as your main bench strop too)

Gary Brommeland makes extremely high quality, well designed, well crafted leather products. I'm extremely impressed with what he produces. That being said, I've had a rather negative business experience with him. If you're getting your product directly from him, be careful about products that are not in stock. I am not alone in having a negative experience in that respect. If you are getting product from a third party, that should not be a concern.

I can't speak to your experience, however I dealt with him directly in regards to this strop and he was a stand up guy. No issues whatever dealing with him directly.
