Hey guys, posted this video in the fishing picture thread and didn't get much of a reaction but I think it's crazy awesome!

My brother inlaw made it with a gopro camera on the end of some fishing line last weekend. We have filmed some ice fishing videos and splake spawning motions with it too which were pretty cool. I can put them up if anyone is interested. It's amazing how clear the water is.

We are going back to fish next weekend and I was wondering what brook trout secrets you guys may have?? I was planning on using mostly flies, unless someone has a better suggestion?
There will most likely be ice around the edges of the lake but hopefully we can break though and fish the ice edges, if the weather isn't too bad.
Here are some flies I tied up tonight...any colours or patterns you guys recommend?

Thanks for any help, hopefully I will have some result pics by next weekend

Ya...I tried a little of each...from all over the spectrum. I just wanna catch a 25 incher....is that too much to ask? There is a little of what "works for Brook Trout" in all of them...any more suggestions??

I LOVE brookies. Actually have a bamboo rod made just for brookie fishing. To get "natives", I typically have to hike about 3 miles in off the trailhead at a National Park to get at them. Unfortunately in these parts, 9" is a monster for a native. For stockers in a local tailwater, I've caught up to about 14" before. I'd love to help you on fly selection, but it looks like we're fishing totally different types of water. I catch most of mine on small (size 16 or 18) Copper Johns, Brassies, or other bead head nymphs.

Unfortunately Manitoba doesn't have any native Brookies, or any trout other than Lakers. Ya different types of water, its a stocked lake. Sounds like you got a nice little spot, I would love to try fly fishing on a small creek for native trout...one day!
Got any pics to tide me over till the weekend? They are remarkable fish.

Sullie, super cool video, thanks for sharing. Good luck with that 25 incher, that would be the brookie of a lifetime or maybe two. Since were dreaming i just want a 200 inch 12 point typical.

Haha
Hopefully it's realistic dreaming...biggest one was 21.5 inches ice fishing last year. I just really hope there is still some open water by next weekend

Here's what a couple of the better sized ones look like out of the water....

Looks to me you have a box full of nice flys already. If it were me, I tie on Black first.

Thanks for the advice, first one will be black....or maybe orange haha

Ha ha not quite...but it might be ending up on a fishing company's website, remember you saw it here first!

That is one nice brookie. I would be absolutely thrilled to catch a stream bred (native) sized like that in a stream down here. Hell, I'll even take a stocked one!

Awesome video!

I'd like to see the others and I'd also love a GoPro camera!

Keep hoping one turns up on the exchange.

How did you control the cameras panning with a fishing line?

The camera just spun on the end of the line...not too technical. the wireless signals don't work through the water so you can't see what you are filming till after.

There was a good amount of ice. We tried to push the boat across till we broke through, but the ice was still over an ice thick and had a hundred yards of ice to get through so we worked our way to shore and went in through the other end of the lake. We caught some fish but nothing over twenty inches. It was -28C so we didn't bother taking too many pics...hard enough taking the gloves off to handle the fish! Here's a couple of pics

To the left is the ice and on the right is the open water.

Guess I'll have to wait till hard water season for that 25 incher! Ice fishing will be well under way in a few weeks

yup, orange worked like a charm. Black worked too but I was catching two for every one my brother inlaw used till he switched to orange and black

Sullie look up Miller River Special fly pattern, it works great for all trout/salmon.......Incredible video and pics, some of the nicest Brookies I have ever seen, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Max!

I will have to give that Miller River Special a go! I'll let you know how it works out but still a few weeks before the lakes thaw...I'm itching to get out there. Had a pretty good ice season but dropped 4 of the biggest lake trout of my life consecutively...Unbelievable! Those fish kept me awake many a nights...Gotta redeem myself!
Hope you guys all have a fruitful spring season! Feel free to post any fish and especially if you caught em on a fly and are willing to share the pattern.

Anyone else use White Muddler Minnows for Spring Lakers?? Or have any tips? White Zonkas work pretty well too...I have find white to be the best for lakers...how about you guys?
