Brother in law deserves a slap across the head.

I went to visit some in-laws on the 4th of July and my brother-in-law, who knows I love knives, eagerly approached me to show me his new "replacement" for his lost Spyderco "user"(which I gave him). It was a Coast Cutlery ripoff of the Kershaw Liner Action. It was a half serrated bead blasted blade which Coast claims is a "specially trated German D1.4 steel."

The fact that he lost the Spyderco Delica I gave him as a gift did not upset me as I have lost good knives too out of carelessness, but the fact that he chose the POS ripoff as a user, gave me the urge to slap him across the back of his head!
I was truly dissapointed in him since he knows what a quality knife is. Some time ago, he asked me to go with him and help him pick out a fixed blade, and he chose a SOG Seal 2000, which he paid for and is not afraid to use it.

I asked him why on earth did you choose that? His response was that he liked the way it looked and he thought it was a good knife because it has a lifetime warranty, but that the $15.00 price he paid was not really a factor.
Since he liked the "style" so much, I told him to go for a drive with me and went back to my place and I gave him my Kershaw Liner Action. He thanked me and on the way back to his place, he offered to pay me for the Kershaw, but I said "no thanks, try not to loose this one."

He then showed me the bubble wrapped package for his Coast knife and it read: Designed in USA, Materials from Europe an Asia, Made in Taiwan. In my opinion it should read: Design copied from a respected maker, Materials collected from who knows where, Assembled in Taiwan. :D

Good observation. It never ceases to amaze me how many people carry truely worthless knives. I always try to point them in the right direction though.

There is a tradition about don't give knives as gifts because it "cuts" the friendship, it is supposed that if you want to give a knife as a present you have to sell it for a simbolic price as little as a cent or so.

Anyway, I've received and given knives for free and nothing bad has happened...yet.

You wouldn't believe the P.O.S.'s that many of my fellow offiers carry. The excuse most give is that they don't want to abuse a nice knife. I do somewhat agree with this. I am not going to carry a $500 custom on duty and abuse the hell out of it, but you can get a reliable knife for less than that. I would at least carry an Endura.

I give knives to my non knife friends all the time. when I do it makes me seem less out there, because of my habit. If everyone carried a knife. It would be a better world.:D

I know the feeling of watching my fellow officers carrying POS knives. They say if they lose it or break it then it is no big deal. they think I am crazy for carrying an Emerson. I tell them I know where my gun is all the time and i do not plan on losing it. I alsao tell them why dont you buy an RG and carry it. they are cheap and if you break or lose it there is no big deal. well the story changes then . Well my life my depend on my gun. I say well your life or someone elses may depend on your knife too....Think About It

What is an RG?

It amazes me that in a job where a quality knife may mean the difference between looseing your fingers on a crap lock, that people carry a 'junk' knife.

I consider a CRK&T as the minimum carry for me, but I would chose an Endura or Delica as the 'minimum' knife if I were to be in a situation where it might REALLY matter. I would use my MOD CQD DD or my Sebi or my LCC or my Military or my 710 M2 or my... But if it had to be a budget model, Spyderco make a great knife.

Question, do officers decide to carry a cheap copy of the Berreta 92D or do they carry the real deal? Is the 92D issued for free or do you have to buy one? Would you use a 'Saturday night special' for a weapon? Same deal with the knife!

Many of my local Firefighters 'pals' carry a SS serrated Police model Spyderco, same with a friend who works on the lifeboat (my suggestion) the reason? Its tough, strong and importantly, the serrations cut the hose/lines used. Oh and they stay sharp a long time as well.

There are a few out there that have "that"
same taste.

Which by the way. . .that taste is only in their mouth !

You have my premission to knock him into next month !

Hey o2bFishN you need to modify your sig line, I dropped the Steel Snob bit;) . It aught to read something along the 'lines' of "in *insert good company for fishing products* I trust".

'Immitation is the truest form of flattery';)

RG was ( and may still be ) the first initials of the RG Rohm company. They made cheap SNS .22 pistols ( mostly ) that were popular in the 70's with criminals of insufficient means. Another of that ilk was Arminius ( .38 revolvers ). The original Second Chance level 1 body armor was sold to counter these POS firearms ( and the old LRN .38 rounds most police used back then). For giggles, I saved my 1975 "Y" neck Second Chance vest. Don't know why, but there you are.

Basic ignorance is just that. But, I don't blame you for wanting to smack your bro-in-law, El Cid. He knows better, then still buys crap. Why?

Dennis -- am surprised to learn many LEOs carry crap on duty. For awhile was a fairly devoted "COPS" watcher. I don't recall seeing many knives pulled by the officers being filmed, but believe every one I saw was a Spyderco Police. For sure most of them were.

After a semi-large purchase from one of the popular catalog/web outfits, I was given a "Free Knife!!" I think I remember the name brand, one of those associated with POS, but not sure enough to name the oufit or the knife company for fear of libel. Well this one was deservedly called a POS. It flat fell apart into 3 or 4 pieces about the 30th time I cycled it. I suddenly only had a few incredibly useless pieces of it in my hand.

I just can't believe LEOs would risk their own lives, or those of the people whose lives they might save to save a few bucks. Weird. I mean of all people who have an insight into the Murphy's Law interjecting itself into life they should be first. Oh well.

not that my 2cents means bubkis but if you cannot save up to buy a custom or at least a good factory knife then dont buy one that is a cheap piece of crap because sooner or later YOU WILL REGRET IT

While I would agree the RG line of handguns fit the general description of "Saturday Night Special," it is important to know that this term, like the terms "assault weapon" and "cop-killer bullets" have many different "definitions," depending on which politician you are talking to at that time of the week.

Essentially, these "terms" are politically motivated perjoratives, with no exact (or agreed upon) definitions. Just try looking up "assault weapons" in the works of Ezell or Chin! I doubt very much you will see them mentioned, let alone "defined."

Of course, Sarah Brady and Bill Klinton know them when they see them...

Some people would classify my Colt Agent as a "SNS" because it has a low-melting point frame, a short barrel, and can be easily concealed.

By the way, I believe it was Clayton Cramer who found that the name "SNS" comes from a racist song, "N-town Saturday Night."

In reality, "SNSs" are "poor people's guns" or "affordable guns."

I try not to use the terms of the "antis" if I can help it. Whenever I say "assault weapon," either that object has indeed been used as a weapon, or I am being sarcastic.
