My brother has EDC'd a Gerber Paraframe for awhile, and recently lost it. He needs a new knife. I keep trying to recomend knives, but alas we have very different tastes. What he prefers are:
Black coating
Serrations
Thumb stud
Has to be a relatively large blade, im thinking somewhere around 3.5 inches
Oh and it has t be in the $20-30 range.

So, what are you guys thinking?

How about a coated Ontario RAT-1 w/ combo edge (model 8847)? I think they run around $30.

Black FRN handles, black coated blade. Partially serrated edge. Thumb studs. 3.5" long and fairly beefy blade (3mm thick, drop point, FFG, AUS-8). Thick liners, locks up very solid.

This is the mini, 3" blade. Get the regular barrage.

Get him my most hated knife, the Gerber Icon. He'd probably like it, as it sounds like we have opposite tastes. :barf:

The Tanto Blur Blem mentioned above is a good one too.

If you're okay with the Chinese brand ones, the Enlan EL01BH also fits well within your budget. The Sanrenmu SRM913P is a little under 3.5", but might be worth a look too.

He needs to broaden his horizons.
Anyways, Ontario Rat 1 as mentioned.
Kershaw RJ 1 Serrated.

If he could stand a Bead Blast, he should look at the Kershaw Compound.

Forgot to mention the Kershaw Tremor - It's stonewashed. Really awesome for what you pay.

Rat-1

I have much more expensive blades, and that one gets carried the most out of my general use category folders.

damn, beat me to it..... just go mine in today and ive been abusing the hell out of it & i love it

The imported Kershaw's in general represent a good value IMO. I feel like he might just like the profile, that the Clash sports. It's somewhat substantial, for what it is. It can also be had with partial serrations if that's your, or his thing. It's also assisted opening, which is a plus to some. I for one prefer a manual, opening knife.
