I found this Plunb axe head in an old house I was renovating several years ago.
Finally deceided to do something with it recently so I soaked it in vinegar for a day and then went about cleaning it up and looking for a new handle. Took a few weeks, but I finally located one in a little saw shopin a nearby logging town.
I did manage to get it sharp enough with the belt sander to put a nice cut in my thumb while installing the handle :o but I still need to clean up some grinding wheel damage induced by the previous owner. They're not to bad though and should clean up easily with a little file work.

The head weighed 3.8lbs on the vegetable scale at the market, and finished at 27".
The handle (from Tennessee Hickory) said D B Cruiser Axe on the label.

I'm really liking this little axe so far.
Just gotta make a sheath for it so I can safely take it to hunting camp this year.
I'll see if the guys over on the sheath forum can give me some ideas for a DB. Bet they can.
Anyway,,, thanks for looking.
Charlie

Hey Charlie, Nice axe, here's a sheath I made a while back.

Regards
Robin

Wow,,,, that's nice Robin!
I hate the ones that look like someone cut the top off of an old boot and folded it over the head.
Got any more pix?
I'm curious to see if it also snaps on the other side. In other words, how do you get it over both ends without the straps unsnapping, or stretching?
I have a nice piece of Horse Hide that would be perfect for that application if ya don't mind me stealing your design.
Thanks
Charlie

great find and nice job!

Thanks BearHunter
I'm far from being an "Axeologist" but I've learned that those that are appreciate these old Plumbs so I thought I throw it up over here.

BTW,,, judging by your user name I'm thinking you might run Hounds.
I'm to old, and there's far to many Wolves in our range to run Bear or Lion anymore, but I still catch a few Short Tails down in the drainages with my little Cur Dogs.

Charlie

Hi Charlie, feel free to use the design. Basically, what ya see is it, it has one side that joins the two edge covers together.
If you wanted both sides covered just cut two and use 4 snaps. I used thick welts all the way around the edge covers.
I have a show in the morning so will dig it out and take a couple more pics for you. I'll post them when I get home late afternoon.

Best regards

Robin

Oh, now I get it. Duhhhh :o I was thinking that there was a strap on the other side too.
Makes perfect sence now.
The Horse hide isn't all that thick. Maybe 7-8. Think I could use two welts? Guess I could use rivets like everyone else does, but I really like the clean look of yours without em.
Thanks again, and don't bother with the pix unless ya just want to.
Charlie

Got the sheath done.
Not in the same league as Pipeman's but very functional.
Thanks Pipeman.

Now she's ready for my anual week long Grouse camp next week.

Looks very nice, Charlie!

Makes me a little sad to hear your comments about the wolves, but I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm a little jealous of your location, Clearwater County. Beautiful country!

Good luck in Grouse camp!

Matt

Thanks M3
Well,,, as you probably know, there's a season for Wolves this year (so far) and it coincidentally opens the same day Grouse does.
You can bet that I've got a tag and will have my little 243 in the truck should the opportunity present it's self.
Unlike allot of the ridge runners up here, I for one wouldn't mind having a few Wolves around if they were properly managed and we were allowed to hunt them regulary, but unfortunatly, just like every thing else the Gubment touches, it's a complete cluster.
But that's another thread, isn't it?

Take Care
Charlie

i sure like that sheath.
i do have a couple hounds, but we can't use them to run bears. theres no baiting here either. i to can't wait for wolf season;) the main pack that was around here was "lethally eradicated"
(28 of em') last year by FWP.
but, you guys are right, thats another thread.
anyway, i'm sure you'll be putting that axe to work this hunting season. good luck guys...

Bearhunter,,, get them hounds out and chase some short tails.
Once I convinced my Curs to leave the Deer alone and they treed their first Bobcat, we've had a ball.
My Curs run silent untill game's actually seen, which puts them cats up pretty fast. Way more better than chasing a dumb ol running Bear for twenty plus miles. Something this old man ain't up to any more.

Once ya catch some spots, you'll forget all about them Bears anyway. :D

Awesome picture, Charlie. My brother is raising a Plott right now. Any experience with them? I think he's 9 months or so by now. He's brindle colored similar to the cur in your pic.

If you ever want to run them on lions again, there are still some decent areas down here in Southern ID where there are "no" wolves....at least yet.

P.S. In Idaho this year, you can buy 2 wolf tags...(at least for now).

Edit to add: I'm not a wolf hater, but I am an avid hunter. I also believe in the sovereignty of states...I'll try to stay on topic, just wanted to explain myself.

On topic,,, off topic,,, it really isn't as important to me as some folks.
We're just talking to like minded folks, that's all, from my point of view.

I'll just add that any kind of hunting dogs are ALWAYS on topic for me and that every Plott I've been around was tough as nails.
Bear hunters up here really like em cause a big boar don't always tree. They'll turn and fight and a dog that won't grab fur ain't much use at that point. Plotts and Redbones are both popular with the Bear Hunters I know. Lots of grit and stamina for those Loooong Bear chases.

Good luck to your brother.
Charlie

there are a ton of lions around here (according to the BLM we live in a "mountain lion nursery"). we see them from time to time, but i have never actually hunted them. lots of folks run them around here on the blm roads below us during the winter lion season. i've thought about it, but my beagles would rather chase snowshoe hares:)
the ideal of chasing "short tails" dosen't sound so bad either. i've talked with my wife about getting a cur or bluetick. do you know of any good ones around your parts?

Good choices both.
I ran BT's on Lions and Bobs down in NV for 30+ years before retiring to Idaho and Curs.
For Curs, Daryl Fry in Elko NV's Striker bred Kemmers are as good as it gets.
For BT's, you've got some of the very best right there in MT in Dell Cameron's line.
They're pricey though, and the wait can be long to get exactly what you want, but his Hounds are some of the best IMO.

Beagles,,,, I love em. Always wanted to go back east and hunt with some of the famous Beagle men until I realized I'd actually have to go "back east".
Brrrr,,, just the thought of even getting near DC gives me the Willies.
Some of the guys over on Big Game Houndsmen run Bobs with their Beagles, but I'm pretty sure they throw em in with a few hounds. Cool little dogs with allot of hunt in em though, and oh that voice. ;>)

If you want a good read, pick up a copy of Dell Camerons "Call Of The Hounds".
It's a great read about the history of MT and the early hound hunting there.

Charlie

great info. thanks, i'll pick up a copy of his book.
i grew up in AL and had a few beagles then also. i finally got a couple out here 8 yrs ago. i still know a few folks 'back home' that run beagles.
i grew up coon hunting with family and friends as well. most have/had BTs, B and Ts, or walkers. some of my family still coon hunt too.
oh, how i do love to here that 'midnight cry'. as you can tell, theres a special place in my heart for hounds:)
btw; i meet a fellow around here a few years ago that ran lions w/ a pack of beagles. he said he did well.
