Brous Karambit: How I made the best folding Karambit MUCH MUCH better!!!

Well, I a huge fan of the Karambit. I have taken some classes, I own several different kinds, and I think that the Karambit is one of the most lethal weapons in the hands of an experienced user. If someone draws a Karambit on me, I will be running for the hills unless I have enough time to reach for my sidearm.

Anyway, having looked at soooo many Karambit knives and different styles....I came to the conclusion that the BROUS KARAMBIT is by far the best Karambit you can get (folding). Yes, there are some other nice other versions out there...some that also cost a great deal more. As great of a Karambit as the Brous is, there were a few things lacking with it....but nothing that couldn't be fixed. ;)

One problem with the Brous is that it does not have a wave feature to deploy it even faster than the way it was designed to...much like any Emerson, Fox, Spyderco, etc. Anything with the Emerson patent.

The second problem was that the clip can only be put on one side....so even if it did have a wave, you could not clip it in the right position (if you are right handed) to where when you could draw the knife and instantly be in the reverse grip. One of the best things the Brous Karambit has is it's 90° design. If you take a closer look at the knife, when the knife is open....the grip aligns up with the blade at 90°. That is perfect. Other Karambits do not offer a 90° angle....and for those who know a little about how to use a Karambit, hooking and whatnot are vital and this angle is ideal...please look at image below. Not only is the angle on the knife perfect, opening the blade is like slicing hot butter, thanks to the ball bearings around the pivot pin. And when closed, you have a monster ring at the end that can inflict some serious damage if you don't want to be lethal with the knife.

Soooo....I decided this bad boy needed some personal touches added to it. First, I put a "wave" on mine and I decided to put a clip on the other side of the knife so that when I drew the knife, I was ready to go in the reverse (preferred) position. (I put a wave on a knife 25 years ago so this is not new to me.)

I took some pictures that show what I mean about the handle and the blade being 90° from each other. I also took a picture of the wave that I put on my blade. If you look at some pics of some wave modifications done to this particular knife, some folks that did this modification, IMHO...I think they took off far too much metal off of the blade. I took off the least amount possible so that it would still work every time you try to "fire" it.

And lastly, I took a clip from another one of my Brous knives....and I installed it on the other side of the knife to allow for a right hand draw. Sometimes when I am carrying my sidearm, I keep a blade in my weak side pocket (left) in case I get into a wrestling match where someone is trying to take my sidearm away from me. In that case, I can carry another kind of Karambit in my pocket, or a different knife all together. My current system calls for my sidearm on my right, my Karambit in my right pocket and a PM2 (or a Microtech OTF variant) in my left pocket. My Spyderco Millie is also always on me behind my sidearm. If I'm getting dressed for a formal occasion, I'll wear one of my Sebenzas.

It might sound like I'm wearing a lot, but I'm really not. The help of a heavy gun belt is great....and I'm 6'1", 230lbs. Here are pictures of the best folding Karambit that just got a heck of a lot better. Oh, and if I wanted to...I could put the original clip back on the knife and put the knife in my left pocket. I could actually keep both clips on but I would have a few too many "hot spots" on the knife. The new clip I put on is hardly noticeable and it doesn't bother me a bit.

This is the Brous Karambit in stock form....

Here you can see how I kept the nice original shape of the blade and took off just enough of the blade so that it hooks. I just did this today so I'm going to polish it up a bit better tomorrow.

Here I tried to demonstrate how the 90° angle comes into play, and you can see the thin little clip I added that makes even better to conceal since I always wear black jeans and pants. I may cerakote the whole thing so that the name vanishes completely. It's not that bad now. I could go "ghetto" and use a sharpie, spray paint it, or put a piece of electrical tape on. But no...I have to send a few other things out to get black cerekoted and will throw the clip in when the time comes.

So what do you guys think??? (I carry a FOX 599 Karambit when wearing sweatpants because it's soooo much lighter than the Brous)

Your work looks good, man.

Thanks. It was not easy....D2 is also not so soft to work with.

I like how CM's turned out, the only thing I didn't like was the amount of metal he took off. He is also fine with it being drawn from the left....mine works from the right. CM knows 100000X more than I do and has done enough to do them with his eyes closed. This was my first, I plan to do more....he and I have similar tastes. But I'm no pro like he is...

I made another one today, one for each pocket...and it's a fantastic little system!!
