I'm intrigued by the Brous Blades Silent Soldier...the fixed blade necker versions.

Does anyone have any experience with these blades? What's your opinion as a low profile EDC with defensive capability if necessary?

I have a few. They are tough knives and very ergonomic for me at least. I do wish they came in something besides D2, maybe M390, but D2 is still a great steel. The Silent Soldier design is pretty impressive. You really do get a ton of knife for such a small package.

Also, in terms of defensive capabilities, there isn't a lot of blade to work with, but in a last ditch scenario they would be better than nothing. I prefer the wharncliffe blade by far, for both EDC and defensive uses if need be.

I like the wharncliffe also. Looks like it could be deployed like a karambit. I could be wrong though, never held one.

The silent soldier is a brilliant design. I have 2 of them, a tanto, and a Ranger V2 Blackout. It's a great little knife for utility purposes. It rides very nicely and unobtrusively clipped to your belt. You will forget it's there.

Speaking of the SS does anyone know if they are legal to carry in California? I would assume that a cop that's just looking to give you a hard time would try to say that it's a punch dagger and that it is illegal. I want to carry my Silent Soldier more often but I would like to keep it clipped to the front of my belt under my shirt. I don't like tucking in my shirt so it is exposed.

Like the Survive! Knives necker?

D2 is a good steel and all, certainly more widely available and better known to most makers, but M390, treated properly, blows it out of the water any day of the week. With a little looking, you can get a Survive! Knives Necker for $60-80, which makes it the obvious choice as it is cheaper and (arguably) better. Also, the sheath it comes with can be affixed to a belt, whereas the Brous is neck-only (IIRC).

I've got the wharncliffe version - love it - and while it could probably be used by some as a karambit, the hole spacing is all wrong for me. What it could be easily used for is as a push dagger. Were I to be in a life-or-death situation, that's how I would employ it.

I think it makes an excellent neck knife or EDC. I usually carry mine as a necker, but I have open carried it on my belt a couple times and it hasn't rated a second glance by non-knife types. My guess is it is so unconventional in appearance when sheathed - the sheath's clip* pretty much obligates horizontal carry - that most people don't even recognize it as a knife.

* While the sheath is fine although larger than necessary, I despise the clip. It is too small to fit on many common belts and is angled, which makes carry in any location except right side nearly impossible and the sheath's holes are not even spaced to allow vertical carry.

I've been looking at the Survive! knives. The Necker seems like it doesn't quite have enough to hold onto. Have you tried one? I really want a Necker II but every time I email them about getting on the pre-order I never hear back. Look like great knives though.

How about a link to the knife or photo? As I recall, Jason Brous is collaberating with SOG and he seemed to like heavy "modern" knives with unique blade shapes.

Info says it can be used on 6 different grips, you really don't need a big blade for self defense either, smaller is actually better IMO

The Brous comes with a clips that can be removed. I wasn't a huge fan of it (clip) to be honest but it got the job done. It is a nice knife, but I really only found it comfortable to use in one grip and it was mainly used as a last ditch knife.

Just get the Brous. It only costs $10 more and I can guarantee it will be more comfortable to grip than that Necker II.
