Hey guys. A buddy of mine and I were talking about going catfishing. Neither of us have ever specifically gone out to catch catfish, and neither of us have ever landed one. The cats around here are Brown Bullhead, and I've seen them at the bottom of a dam, but never caught them. My buddy works in the seafood department at a local grocery store so he was going to snag some raw jumbo shrimp, i heard they can be used as a bait. What else works for them that you would have sitting around the house? I put all my baitcasters away for the season and kept out my spinning rod with 30lb red power pro on it. I'm thinking about putting a 2' leader on it of mono, probably 8 or 10lb. Is that a good idea? I've seen some people run two hooks on one line, but i'd rather just run one hook, unless it's advised to run two. Any info will be helpful! I mainly fish for bass most of the season, and trout in the beginning of the season.

Bullheads here bite readily. I dont know if they are brown bullheads or not. They have yellow bellies. I catch them on worms. They usually swallow the hook. I hate it when they swallow the hooks so usually use corn and fish for carp instead.

chicken livers soaked about a week in the own blood ~~ no refrigeration and wrap them up in a silk stocking and slap it on a hook.!! smell wonderful -- well the catfish think so anyway..! they go more by smell than sight..* lol

Yeah he got some jumbo shrimp and a lb of chicken livers in blood. So I cut up the shrimp and theyre soaking in with the livers. Hope we get some good bites!

There are catfish in the Connecticut River. You can tell the difference between a catfish and bullhead by the tail. A bullhead will have a square tail, verse the forked tail of a catfish. Nightcrawlers work well for both. Good luck and post up some pics!

I will! I live right next to the hammonassett river, used to live somewhat close to the Farmington. Changed up my fishing when I had to move down here. Going to be fishing a place called Messerschmidt pond for the cats, hopefully we catch a few.

I pack the chicken liver in salt for a few days. It toughens it up, and helps keep it on the hook. You might add a little garlic powder to it.

We leave a pack of hot dogs in the sun for a few days and shake some garlic on them, but we have also had good luck with chicken livers, shrimp, and the biggest ones were caught on some chunks of mule deer liver.

We usually just use nightcrawlers and use the bullhead for bait for blues and flatheads

I had really good luck with chicken livers soaked in Jaegermeister and a strawberry kool-aid packet.
The bait would not sit in the water for a minute before I had a fish on.
I have also had good luck using bluegill scraps in a stocking like stated above.
