What's the story on the brown Tenacious variant that is popping up on a number of sellers' site recently? I didn't see this announced as a sprint run and it isn't in either of the 2015 catalogs. Can anyone fill me in on this? Also, is the coating paint or black oxide? I know it's not DLC or TiNi at that price but I'm just curious what they use on the China knives.

The Brown G10 Tenacious comes in satin and black coated blade. The black coating is more of a paint than an oxide, and the coating on the Chinese produced Spydercos is decent but not as good as Taichung coatings. It's a lot like the coating on the black bladed Ontario RAT 1. The Tenacious is a Smoky Mountain Knife Works exclusive, so there's no sprint run announcement from Spyderco. SMKW has numerous retailers and dealers in their group, so they're not too hard to find. I picked up one at Knife Works. I don't know if there's any truth to it, but on another forum I saw an estimate of 1000 units of each blade type.
The brown with black blade works particularly well on the Tenacious. There are some green and blue Tenacious out there right now too, but the brown is the only one I've seen that comes with the coated blade.

...chuckle.... well, the geographical distinction is less significant than the vendor/distributor distinction--not to redirect this toward GBU geodata.
The Tenacious is a fine and capable knife at that price point in particular, and it is nice to have some variety available. The black finish does appear and feel to be similar to the ESEE applied black finish. I have no expectation that it will be as durable as other finishes e.g. DLC, TiNi, BC etc., but at this price, no worries. Show us some wabi, ne?
I'm thinking about picking one of these up in satin for my Dad. I gave him my Skyline a while back, and he lost it in about a week. Then I gave him a blue Shuffle 2, and he lost it after roughly two days, lol. He's been carrying a cheap pile of crap for the last month or two, without losing it, but I had to toss it in the 'bin' today because the pivot screw fell out and is MIA, lol. I think he's 'ready' again. But I'm torn between this knife and the Meadowlark 2. I'd just grab a Delica for him, but the odds of getting lost are good.
I bought one, the satin version. Been carrying it the last couple days, it is like every other Tenacious I've handled lol...I wish I had more interesting things to say but I don't! In short, a nice value EDC option and in a nice neutral "corporate camo" color for those of us who benefit from such things. My only issue is I can't decide what color lanyard to put on it.
