Brown Tweener Scales?

Hi All

This is the result of an experiment. I changed my scale dye hoping to turn peanut butter scales into a bright red handle. Well it did not work - it just changed tan into chocolate brown; I am still trying to decide whether I like it or not and whether to keep them on this 15 or go back to black.

What do you guys think? If nothing else, they are at least different!

they look like molded leather. kinda cool. burn a brand into 'em and you're done. :D

They look good to me but I thought you had red all figured out?

I like them. If you don't, then I'll trade you for some virgin PB scales.

They are OK but I was trying to come up with a bright red instead of brick red. It's all just fun anyway. And Wooly Bugger I think I will hang onto them for now.

Colonel, I like them. Keep them on, I'm still rocking my OD ones on my 16.

i have to be the new guy with the stupid question but if you dont mind me asking how did you dye them?

I've done it a couple of times on peanut butter scales - and first used a combination of 80% Cherrry Cool Aid and 20 % some red wool dye my wife had - here's how that turned out:

Kind of brick red not really a bright red. And if you look closely the scales installed on the knife are not the same exact color as the ones on the porch rail so I don't have anyway to know exactly what they will look like after I take them out of the dye. So then I tried liquid Rit scarlet dye and got the "brown scales". In both cases I soaked them overnight. Hope that helps

I dunno, I kinda like the look of those brown handles. You can't really go wrong with earthtones, especially if it's a hard use outdoors/camp/etc knife. Brown looks great on that tweener IMO.

I don't recall seeing the red one Col. I like the idea of Koo-aid to adjust color, good thinking.

For my OD scales I used 1/3 dark brown and 2/3 Kelly Green. There are charts on the internet that tell you what color combos create certain colors. Mine are holding up very well.

Not to hijack the thread, but here's a pic.

Nice Murph and don't worry about the thread. Now we need to figure out where we can get some CAMO DYE!!! BTW guys, all mine are holding up just fine. The dye seems to be permanent even when washed and I should have mentioned, if you use Kool Aid, DO NOT SPILL IT ON YOUR WIFE'S COUNTER. Expect to be in serious trouble if you do.
