Brownell's Question?

I have a blade that I have made and have heat treated. I would like to know if I have to polish the blade before I coat it and bake it, or if I just have to make sure that it is clean and can coat it with the heat treat (dark coloring) on it? there really isn't any scale on it from heat treatin.
