Browning and Buck

Hello, i’m new here and was just wondering what anyone knows about the Browning model 0920 bowie, I noticed the blade is very similar, if not identical, to the Buck 916 Bowie, nothing on the blade states where it was made, what steel it is made of or anything. It’s just engraved “Browning” on one side of the Ricasso and “Model 0920” on the other, also has the Browning logo on the sheath. It’s definitely stainless steel, most websites that list it just say “made in china” but they tend to do that with knives that they have little to no information on. It’s very very cheap compared to the Buck 916, (about £60 for the 0920 and £250+ for the 916) but I know that Buck has made knives for Browning in the past with no Buck markings. Maybe it’s the same blade shape but in a cheaper steel? Perhaps it’s the same blade but made in China, again, in a cheaper steel. Maybe something else?

Any info on the knife would be appreciated, i’ve been digging around for months looking for info but have found next to nothing, even started doubting that it was actually a knife from Browning since there’s no official info from Browning that I can find. Also, I am new here so my apologies if I post this in the wrong place, I don’t know if this should be put in discussion or question because yes I’m asking multiple questions but also trying to have a discussion about it, so again, sorry if this is posted in the wrong place. Thank you to anyone that might reply.

its not made by Buck and isn't a Buck 916. I know this as that browning import has a useable sized handle.

the 916 has a very thin and tiny handle and is made more for mounting and show than for using as a large knife. that browning is made in China by whichever factory gave them the best deal. steels likely a 7cr or 3cr or lesser variants of chinese steel.

The design goes back a ways. Many brands have made them. Made in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, etc.
The Buck is a solid 420HC knife. The Browning is a made in China knife of unknown stainless. Hence the big price difference.
Thanks, it holds a decent enough edge and worth the money imho. I really like the blade shape, best bowie blade shape I’ve ever had, really hate not knowing what steel it is exactly.

Thanks for the reply, i never expected it to be a straight up Buck 916, that would be insane. Just wondered if it was a cheaper steel (which it is ofc) but produced by Buck or the blade design is from Buck or something because they’re so similar. Still a great knife for the money imho, holds a decent enough edge. There’s something about having Buck related to a blade that gives you more confidence in it I think.

It isn’t related to Buck in any way, though.

yep. the one ya got is chinese factory made. which one, who knows. Buck makes a great knife......but the 916 is more for shows than work. the handle is so tiny it's comical in person. weirdly pics don't seem to show it in the size it actually is. I've been campaigning Buck for years now, to change the pattern to have a full size handle and make it a real knife for using...so far they did one special run with a larger handle, but that's it.

your knife is fine for light and regular use.....I wouldn't push it hard though.

I wasn’t saying that it was, i was asking if it was, kinda the whole point of this thread.

nah I won’t, only thing i actually push as hard as i can with is Tramontina machetes. My knives, whether folding or fixed, are used for light and regular use. Use, don’t abuse.
