I just got my A G Russell catalog, and there is a beautiful pic of the Browning Crazy Horse knife. I really like this old style, old timey at its best. Also a little bit of my heritage, and I'm a sucker for obsidian blades and natural handles.

Unfortunately I don't have the money for it. But, someday later on, I will. When that day comes, do I look for this Browning piece, or do I get one custom made? Is this a pretty low price for the materials and man hours involved? Would a similar custom piece be double the price?

Either way, it is still a beauty. Browning hit a home run with this one in my opinion.

It is a beaut',
I question Browning's use of the Native American pic,it is implying,in my mind anyway, that it is Crazy Horse. The never photographed Crazy Horse.

Are you sure about that? My wife is Ogalala, and we were jus talking about Crazy Horse yesterday; She never mentioned that he was never photographed, I got the same catalog..

edited to add:
man, there sure is some controversy over that photo...

Here is an obsidian blade I got from AG Russell many years ago. Sorry to say I don't remember who made them for AG. I can't really say I use it but it always is there on the coffee table and I have grabbed it to open a box a couple of times. It didn't slice but being kind of "toothy" it did cut through the tape pretty easily.
The Browning knife you mentioned may be a pretty nice one but as far as any true native America connection goes you might consider one of Ray Kirk's medicine blades. Ray is a Mastersmith and does well in cutting competitions with his forged blades. He is also a Cherokee from Oklahoma and the medicine blades are "smoked". (I have one ordered:) ) http://www.rakerknives.com/medicine_blade.htm

It may be disputed about Crazy Horse being photographed but what is not disputed is that he held a grudge against Custer for the Washita Massacre in 1868. Eight years later at Little Big Horn, he got payback.

Who knows what kind of knife CH used? How do they know?
If I wanted a display piece like that, I would get a custom made one that was unique, and not some factory produced one of almost 2000 series.
Overpriced, IMO.
