I just picked up a Browning model #696 hunter/skinner, and in searching for info on the type of steel used, I ran across numerous sources that reported the knife was made with a "440C-like" stainless. Being as it is made in Italy, I was wondering if it might be N690. I should add that the blade takes a keener edge and holds it better than i typically find with a 440C blade - but i suppose it could be a function of edge geometry, heat-treat, both, or something else. If anyone had any information (or educated guesses) i'd be grateful for any info on what this steel might be! Thanks in advance,
