Does anyone have any experience with the Browning Mako fixed-blade? In particular, how is the steel and the sheath?

It's a nice little knife... the coating is very sturdy, experiencing absolutely zero effect after being stabbed repeatedly into drywall. The steel remained unaffected through the ordeal. The AUS-8A steel is not state of the art, but is a proven performer with few complaints, although the knife is a bit pricey for the 169$ suggested and approximately 130$ discounted. The handle is a bit small although the checkered g-10 grips and tapered butt gives a good grip. It makes an excellent hunting and skinning knife and will handle most chores admirably, but is lacking as a fighting or self-defense knife.

The sheath is nice and sturdy and the Tek-Lok sturdy albeit bulky, but has trouble holding the knife in the sheath. The sleek design of the knife offers very for the kydex sheath to grip, and since the closest rivet is inches away from any sort of gripping area, friction-fitting is rather weak. I solved that problem by drilling several small holes near the mouth of the sheath and using very small zipties to increase the pressure. The knife is now firmly and adequately held, but not in any way that I would consider "foolproof" and "secure".

Thanks for the imput. Yeah, the retail seems a bit high to me as well, but I found it at Cabelas for eighty bucks. I was considering a gerber yari, but the sheath on the Mako seemed better... but if it's a lose fit it probably isn't! Out of curiousity, what makes it a poor choice for defense?

Tiny handle...
you have two distinct, but slight choils, neither one very effective for preventing your hand from sliding into the blade.
