I already own a Wetterlings-made Husqvarna hatchet and CS Trail Hawk.
I've become interested in smaller pack-axes like the Husqvarna, but see certain advantages to the spike hawks, particularly this one. Reasons:
- Spike to aid in digging holes in wood and soil, crushing stone/brick/concrete into gravel (yes, this is important to me)
- Thick Full-tang construction for added leverage and durability despite small size, but adds weight.
- Comfortable curvature to handle, although handle-wrap will need improvement
- Large cutting edge and thin geometry for improved cutting performance
- Thick stock allows head to be used as a hammer
- impressive quality sheath-system
I know it's too short for good chopping, but the geometry seems better than other pack axes I've seen, e.g. Gerber Pack Axe (head is much too fat) and Gerber BG axe (head is much too thin). Can anyone comment on their use of this little spike hawk or reasons why it is inferior to other pack axes and should be avoided? Any comments on how it throws?
Alternatively, anyone have one they haven't used much and want to off-load? I've made a thread in the WTB-section.
Thank you.
