I have a student who has trained with me for the last several years who lives in Costa Rica. Over the years we've grown to become good friends. The last time we trained together he said when he gets back to CR he is going to send me an authentic Central America Machete.

I thought "okay" that is nice and I'd apprecate a very thoughtful gift. Well last night we chatted via Skype and during our conversation he mentioned to me that he is sending me a picture of my new Machete which he has named Brunka - pronounced Broon Kah. Brunka is the name of a Costa Rica indigenous tribe whose warrior like culture are the only tribe to never submit to the Spainards and defeated them in battle.

The Machete is made by Corneta. I have no idea who this manufacturer is and thought maybe some of you more enlightened members can shed some light on it. Regardless if it is top of the line, middle or bottom I'm going to cherish this gift forever! And work it hard like it was intended!

The sheath is made by a master craftsman who lives up in the mountains. He and his son create these masterpieces. The senior craftsman is now too ill to continue working so his son made Brunka's.

My gift arrives in the next few months when he flies back to the states. I'm truly humbled and honored...now to find a something suitable to send him!

Bro. Corneta IS the manufacturer. They have operations throughout Central America and I " think' the company began in El Salvador ? Not sure.
I do know the Ticos say it is the best. Better than Tramontina or Imacasa.

Now.For a gift.
Ticos kill hogs on a semi regular basis for holidays and "fiestas" and the knives they have to do this are just plain old Tramontina kitchen knives with a butcher knife shape.
UMMM They suck for that job:jerkit:
I blow their minds when I hand them my Kalinga or Alpha hunter by Buck.
Find a fixed blade with a skinner type shape and hook that Tico up.
He'll be thrilled.
Like this but a non folder.

To a Tico a folding knife is a lot like a folding table. If you get my drift ;)

One of these guys here could slap a custom together quick.

Pura Vida !

Here's a Corneta with a Guatusu scabbard.

Wow, I just saw this thread, nice nice sheath. Corneta is not a manufacturer. They are a brand name that used to be shared by many different companies including Imacasa and Incolma. It first originated in Germany but got split up over the great machete migration of the 50's and 60s. You will see Corneta stamped machetes, sometimes with a bugle, from everywhere including Costa Rica, South America, and even the Dominican Republic. It is common to see this style shared with many older machete companies. Now, Incolma (Gavilan, Corneta, etc) has the rights for it.

It was shipped from CR...and my amigo said he picked up at a local hardware store. The leather maker lives up in the mountains near his grandmother's house. I hope when I visit next year to pick up a few more!

He sent me a matching smaller sheath for a file. A super great amigo!
