Brunton Compass Questions

Has anyone used Bruntons Compasses, specifically I guess I am looking for information on their Eclipse series with the "Circle over Circle" alignment system. I am wondering if this is a pretty nice way to go or if most prefer the rotating arrow setup better.

I rarely have used a compass really, but plan to venture even further off the beaten path this fall in Montana and think it is time to stop relying as much on my good sense of direction and start to use a compass. I also have a GPS 12 that I will haul along, but I think a nice compass will be of good use (obviously).

I like the looks of the Brunton 8099 Eclipse. I understand it also is needle-less?? they also have a GPS companion compass that is the circle over circle setup too. Maybe that one would work fine also.

Any thoughts by those who have USED these ones? I am set up with them as a dealer so the cost part is a little better than normal and I am willing to give one a try.

Thanks!

Jon

I'm not familiar with the particular compass you speak of, but Brunton makes some excellent compasses in general.

I own an example of both ends of the Brunton line. I own a Brunton Pocket Transit, which is a beautifully made precision compass with a machined aluminum housing, and I have an all plastic Brunton compass that I picked up cheap at a discount store. Needless to say, the fancy one works real well, happily, so does the inexpensive one. I used the inexpensive one to teach my son the basics of map reading, it's adjustable for declination, and has a graduated base plate for distance measurement. IMHO, Brunton makes a good product, no complaints.

They also have an 8097 model that is like the GPS model, but geared more toward normal map use. It also has a whistle that plugs into it on a lanyard, for emergency use.

Jebediah: Do you think for normal use with or without a GPS, that your model 8096 is a nice compass? I do use a GPS 12 also, but really want a nice compass to go along instead of my old Normark compass.. although that one appears to be pretty decent.

I kind of like the circle in circle system. At least it looks cool. I think it would be an easy sytem to use.

I just returned from Cabelas here in MN. I got a chance to look over the 8097 and was not too excited about it. I do like the looks of the roamer scales on the 8096 though. The 8099 was nice, but bulky and would be a pain in the butt to take off the cover when using on a map.

Another thing I noticed. I thought the circle on circle "disk" type setup was kinda weird. It seemed to move around a bit more than the typical arrow, unless you he;d it very level. Maybe it was just me. I am kinda confused now. Which way to go. They make a 8010G model that seemed like a decent choice. Their mirrored models all looked cheap, with the exception of the 8099.

Hi JPB...

The Bruton Eclipse is Sweeeeeet!!!

I've been eyeing that compass for quite awhile now,, and it is Very nice and Very well made....

I own and have owned several compasses from silva,,both mirror and non,, and I like this one the best out of all of them..

What price range did you find the Eclipse at ??
The price I found was $80.00,,but I bet with a little digging I could find it cheaper over the net...

Jebediah....
Thanks for the input. You have some good stuff on Bruntons! I have their new catalog and found the 54LU which seems pretty nice too. It lists for $69! Wow... Imight go with the 8096 Eclipse for now ($34.99 list) and see how I like the circle in circle. One thing nicer about the 54 is that it has the luminous points, but I doubt I will ever be in the dark and need one, but.. who knows?

The more expensive 8099 doesnt even have luminus points. I find that to be kinda goofy. You'd think a compass that costs that much would be "fully loaded".

Now I would like to get a good book on Map Use with a compass and or GPS to teach me some tricks.

Try www.youna.com for the Model 54, they had it for about $52 not long ago, I think they sell the Eclipse too. Might have to wait a week while they order it but the prices are right. For some reason none of the Eclipse line has luminous markings. </font>

Thanks! I am a dealer so i can get them a bit cheaper yet. I just am trying to decide which one/s I want for my own! :-)

Hi guys,

Eric go to TripleAughtdesign.com they sell the Brunton Eclipse 8099 Deluxe for $63.95 which is the lowest I've found sofar.

I've been eying the eclipse also for some time for some of our older Explorer groups but in Holland these 8099's go for over $100 and that's to much to spend on a "scouting" compass.

Might anybody know of a cheaper source please drop me an email

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

I am an authorized Brunton Dealer but do not stock much inventory. If anyone wants any of their higher end (or a few of their cheaper) models, I can get you the best prices but it will take an extra week for shipping from them to me. Just e-mail me! jon@jpcorp.com
