I went to a local knife maker yesterday, he was showing me and explaining everything. He mentioned brute de forge, and I've heard Jason Knight use this term... But I'm not sure what it means exactly. This is the amazing knife I got from the local maker.FB_IMG_1594281874803.jpg

Basically hammer marks on the flats to make it look old timey. Kind of hipsterish IMHO.

Here’s a good old thread:

Hi Roy,

Good link, good examples.

I disagree *almost* completely with your assessment. Yes, there are forged blades with intentionally hammered areas to make it 'look' old-timey. That's rudimentary.

Then there are MASTER forgers who pound and finish a blade leaving only the bevels to be ground. So skilled, it looks 'rough' yet they are finished with fairly even rough surfaces, while retaining an intentional shape. Forging in the finger guard is a classic advanced area.

Maybe it's done so well by the most skilled, that lesser craftsman have done these to the point of 'whatever' for you?

For me, if it is done WELL, it's advanced skills. I like it, and appreciate the skill and the 'look'.

Done poorly, I guess it's 'hipsterish'. ;)

Soltangris Soltangris Congrats on that knife above. Although not Bd'F it's done well.

Please don’t confuse “hammer marks on the flats” as “hammer marks only added to the flats”. In a sense we are both right, but you took my comment in the context that someone made a knife and just slammed a hammer down on the area near the spine. That isn’t at all what I’m saying. Making less assumptions will help, but I’m glad you got excited enough to comment so the OP could gain greater perspective.

So for both of you thank you! I not knowing, thought the stuff was FORGE SCALE left on, and not worked by the master to get the look.... So the brute de forge, I thought was intentionally left on forge scale that hadnt been touched. Thx guys!
