early yes, estaloc handles yes, prototype? don't think so. not terribly rare, but harder to find unused 
prototypes are marked such, and Ethan has mentioned that very few, if any where marked as such back in the day. i'd say it was a production model. i'd also say see my literature collection, though there is a lot lacking in this area - the brute was kind of a late entry transition model before they went bust, and then to Camillus
