I would buy either one with confidence, they are great blades for the money.

Hi Brookskives,

Both of the knives are made with the same blade steel. 8Cr13Mov. It is a good steel, fairly hard with good edge holding features.

The Cara Cara is a lock-back, but made by a maker with excellent experience and knowledge in lock-backs. The Raven is a Walker linerlock. Both are fairly ergonomic. Both employ a "finger choil" for choking up n the blade.

The Raven is available only with aluminum scales at this time (steel liners).

The Cara Cara is available in; full stainless, G-10 scales with stailess liners and FRN with nested steel liners.

Both are available in plain ede or combination plain / serrated edges.

Both are designed and produced with the intention of of providing the best bang for the buck available anywhere.

Both will be shaving sharp from the box.

At their current prices, it would be difficult, IMO, to go wrong with either.

You can ususally get more response on byrd brand knives on the Spyderco forum (under manufacturers), as byrd is a subsidiaryof Spyderco.

Just a couple of things to think about- the liner lock requires you to place a finger in the path of the closing blade, and liner locks can be inadertently unlocked during use. Can you tell I favor lockbacks? Hope this helps, Mike

Yup, but to disengage a midlock or backlock, most folks have a few fingers in the path of the blade, compared to just one on the linerlock.

In general, unless I'll be using it for very hard use, I prefer linerlocks. They're just more convenient to me.

Just an FYI in helping you make your decision.....I have the all SS Cara Cara.... it's heavy, just about the same weight as the G-10 Cara Cara. It's also extremely well built, and slim enough to tuck just about anywhere. If weight is not an issue the G-10 Cara is a great choice. If you purchase one you will be amazed at the quality and value ! The Cara Cara now comes with a choice of FRN handle also....if you need something a bit lighter. As well, if you want something a bit smaller and lighter, but want a lockback, there is the Byrd Medowlark...it, like the Cara Cara, comes in your choice of all stainless, G-10, or FRN handles.

These are remarkable knives....and the price makes them an outstanding value.

-regards

Byrd knives are a great value. While I don't care for the Stainless Cara Cara I love the feel of my PE G10 Cara Cara. I have already been looking at a G10Meadowlark. For a hard use work knife that won't kill you to lose or replace it is between the Ka-Bar Dozier folders and the Byrds for the best choice currently available.

My 2 cents,

Both are great knives, but I prefer the G10 Meadowlark (office use) and the Cara Cara (urban environment :)). They're slightly slimmer than the Raven/Crow in the pocket.

(There comes soon the FRN Flight and Crossbill, too... :D)

I'll be getting a meadowlark in G10 for at the office "opening boxes/cutting zipties" duty.

I had a raven and i really liked the blade shape but I'm not a fan of aluminum handles or coated blades so I sold it.

If they made an uncoated raven with G10 it'd be the perfect "beater" knife IMO.

I have both the G-10 Cara Cara and the Raven, although I just got the Raven and haven't had time to use it much. I generally prefer liner locks because I can close them faster without having to shift my grip to access the lock as I do on a lockback. That said, I slightly prefer the G-10 Cara Cara over the Raven mostly due to the handle and blade shape and maybe something else I can't put my finger on yet. I think they both would be OK for you though. I like the G-10 Cara Cara almost as much as my high end folders and I carry and use it often. The G-10 Cara Cara is a bit heavy because of the thick liners, but most of the time this does not bother me.

Personally I trust the lockbacks on the Byrds more than the liner locks. That's not to say that the liner locks aren't good, it's just that I trust lockbacks more than the other. That said, either is good for what you are going to use them for. I would, however, look at the Meadowlark G-10 or FRN and the Crow if you're working in an office type environment - the CaraCara and Raven are larger type blades.

Oh yeah, now I remember the other thing that makes me like my Cara Cara more than my Raven. The Raven spring is weak such that it doesn't stay closed with much force. I could see it perhaps coming open in my pocket. I also have the Crow and it seems alright in this regard, and so I like it as a smaller knife.
