I just joined the site and was excited to learn a lot more about knives and had a simple question about how much a knife was worth a friend gave me. But I didn't read the sticky about how I can't ask that question unless I buy a gold membership. What kinda ******** is that? I understand about selling or trading stuff but just asking a question. Even about selling or trading I could see you gotta be part of the community for a while till you can do that but all of a sudden if I fork out 30 bucks to the site now I can. How the hell would that make me any more honest because I paid you guys money? I'm on many other forums and never seen this. Just another money hungry place just to ask a question. I'll prolly get banned for this post but I really don't care.

You know.. If you don't like the site.. just leave and don't come back. No need to post about it.

Welcome!

Regardless of how long you've been here, you can't sell or trade unless you pay. I do neither, so I don't really care. and no, you won't get banned but you'll probably get an infraction or something. we all have to deal with the rules, whether we like them or not, me included no matter how much I pay. if you don't like it, no ones keeping you. I apologize if I sound rude, my intentions aren't negative towards anyone. :)

Cheers,
Kirby

Yeah sorry it just pissed me off. I don't mean to offend anyone. Seems like a great site besides that.

That rule is there so that we don't get flooded with people asking about value.

It's cool, happy to have you, just keep the rants in whine & cheese and there won't be any problems. :)

It just seems ridiculous in my case to fork over $30 bucks for a single question and/or trade when that would be the only time I would use it for the whole the whole year as I'm not a knife enthusiast or really have many knives. Might as well just sell it on ebay and pay less than a buck to list it instead of tying to help someone out here who would want or trade for it.

In case some people weren't aware of it- keeping a forum up and running costs money. There are no membership fees for people to use and enjoy several aspects of this forum (it's mostly a free forum), but the owner needs some way to make money to keep it running.

If people disagree with the rules of Bladeforums, they should start their own knife forum. Then they would appreciate how much time, work, and money it costs to create one and keep it going.

Somehow, thousands of people have been able to enjoy this site without complaint, and without paying any money. Heck, I've enjoyed this forum for eleven years and I'm still just a "Registered User".

If you don't like it here, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Yeah I understand it could get flooded. Wish they had like a month or even week membership that's a lot cheaper for people like me.

Here's an idea, reddit has a decent knife community, they don't mind if you ask values and you can sign up in ten seconds. :)

That's a good idea! Say, $5 for two months?

That's a good idea. I was just going to join another knife forum but didn't even think of rededit. Again sorry for my mini rant haha. I've just never came across where you gotta pay to ask a question on any forum.

No offense but the rule is there for exactly "your case." It keeps the traffic down to people who ARE enthusiasts. I know I wouldn't want the forum bogged down in useless questions on what the rusty hunk someone pulled out of their attic is worth. Not saying that's your case but you get the idea. Feel free to browse and participate though. You might just become an enthusiast. :D

You could buy Prices guide to collector knives and most likely not have to even ask about knife prices here.
Contact the forum and suggest a weeks membership for say $500 or a months for say about $250. This isn't a nonprofit organization.

There is no problem with gold members or higher asking for value. It's not a concern with "flooding". It was mainly put in place to curb people trying to sell without a membership.

I'm glad you read the stickies but you must've missed that profanity is prohibited. Please edit your post.

Yeah I understand. On the other hand though how many useless questions are asked about everything else on this site that ppl can post just not price? That is how people learn and start to become part of the community. There's been many times I joined forums not knowing much and having awesome people help me out in which I started helping other people out with what I did know and learned. That's the whole point of an online forum community (In my opinion). It was a MOD Mark I LE btw. Anyway I'll find another site no disrespect to any of the members or the members who have paid to keep the site running.

rpepper, don't take it personal. That rule is there to act as a kind of filter and keep folks who would just ask for a value and never show up again out of BF. You might agree with it or not, but there's no need to take offense. The forum is owned by somebody after all, and he gets to set the rules.

Stick around and you'll find that most of the guys here are helpful and reasonable. I've been a member for a while and I've learned a lot. I decided to become a paying member although I only ever bought something on the exchange once.

Let me clear this up. Bladeforums needs money to run. For years, Spark was paying that money himself, even as the forum was growing, and getting more expensive. So we ended up with a pay to play system, different levels of membership depending on what you could do: sell items, sell your own work, sell other companies products.

Some people wanted to sell but didn't want to buy a Gold membership. So what they would do is come here and ask the value of a knife ... and later in the thread hint they'd be willing to part with it. Then buyers could email them and they'd get around the membership fees.

Read the rule again:

WHAT IS MY KNIFE / GADGET / SPATULA / TUNING FORK WORTH ?!?!?!?!
In order to curtail potential abuse of membership privileges associated with the forums, questions regarding valuation of knives and collections are limited to those with a membership level which permits selling on this site. Accordingly, registered and basic members may not start or post in threads with such requests whether with the intent to sell or for informational purposes only. This rule applies throughout the site.

One other note, we can't always give a good value anyway. Knives aren't like cars, where you can get a book with agreed values for buyers or sellers. Looking at what they sell for on eBay is a good bet, but rare items don't necessarily show up, and condition of old knives can change that value too.

If you list the item with good pictures on ebay and a good description of the knife, and you start the auction of $1, you will find the value of the knife pretty quick, because if people want the knife, they will bid on it up to their value. If you just want what people are paying for your knife, do a completed listing on ebay. You will also find what your knife is worth. An opinion is subjective, a completed auction is objective.
