BT2, just how bad is it?

I heard that this stuff was slightly inferior to Black-T. So how easy does BT2 scratch/flake off? I'm considering getting some black coated Benchmades, but scratches and poor coatings drive me insane (I can't stand scratches).

Some people say guys buy knives with black blades because they look cool. And those people don't buy black bladed knives because when scratched they don't like how the knives LOOK even though, when scratched, bt2 is still impregnated in the steel preventing rust.

Interesting

.

Don't let blade coatings stop you from getting a knife you really want.

Hrmm, how does the black titanium based coatings work? Does it stay on better than BT2 and Black-T?

Thanks for your help guys

BT2 is really quite bad. I wish Benchmade would stop using it, or at least offer M2 blades without it. There is absolutely no comparison between Teflon-based coating (BT2, Black-T, etc.) and Titanium-based coatings. The titanium coatings are much more expensive, both in materials/maintainance and in initial machine purchases, but outperform Teflon easily. I mean, Teflon cookware has warnings against using anything remotely abrasive to clean it, and in a post a while back, someone reported finding a 'scratch' on a TiN-coated blade, which later turned out to be metal from something else, which had scratched off onto the surface of the blade, and could be wiped off.

BT2 sucks, it is very inferior to black-t. BT2 scratches very, very easily. IKt looks like crap when it is new. I wont buy another benchmade that has it. The black coatings that use titanium are the way to go. These coatings are very hard, harder than the steel in terms of rockwell and hence are very tough. I would recommend getting a knife with this finish if you must have black.
